<p>Cathole Cave, Cat Hole Cave or Cathole Rock Cave, is a cave near Parc Cwm long cairn at Parc le Breos, on the Gower Peninsula, Wales. It is a steep limestone outcrop, about 200 yd north of the cromlech along the Parc le Breos Cwm valley and near the top of the gorge, about 50 ft from the valley floor. The cave is a deep triangular fissure penetrating the hillside and narrowing towards the top. It has two entrances, with a natural platform outside the larger of the two. It is about seven miles  west south–west of Swansea, Wales, in what is now known as Coed y Parc Cwm at Parc le Breos, on the Gower Peninsula.</p><br>
<p>The cave was used as a shelter by bands of Mesolithic hunters and as a Neolithic ossuary. During the first excavation of the cave in 1864, finds were made only from the Mesolithic to medieval periods. In his "The Proceedings of the Prehistoric Society vol.25 (1959), pp. 260–69", archaeologist Charles McBurney notes that "In the Post Glacial period the cave was much used by Mesolithic hunters&quot a conclusion confirmed by John Campbell&#39;s excavation of 1977.</p><br>
<p>A 1984 excavation by Aldhouse-Green revealed the earliest finds from the cave, two tanged points that may date to c. 28,000 BP, an interglacial period during the Late Pleistocene roughly contemporaneous with the Red Lady of Paviland. The "lady" was discovered in a cave between Port Eynon and Rhossili, about eight miles (13 km) west of Cathole Cave, and has been radiocarbon dated to c. 29,000 BP, the oldest known human burial in Great Britain.</p><br>
<p>Rock art from the Upper Paleolithic, thought to represent a reindeer, was discovered on the back wall of Cathole Cave in September 2010. The engraving, measuring approximately 15 x 11 cm, has been radiocarbon dated to 14,505 ± 560 BP. According to Dr George Nash, the archeologist who made the discovery, it is "the oldest rock art in the British Isles, if not north-western Europe". Following the discovery, the cave was laser-scanned (using point-cloud technology). Following this project and systematic vandalism, the entrance of the cave was gated with a metal grille. Despite this set-back Nash has made further discoveries. Other marks/motifs of a possible similar date have been found elsewhere within the rear section of the cave.</p><br>
<p>Late glacial tool finds from the Upper Palaeolithic date to c. 12,000 BP: flint blades known as Cheddar points; smaller bladelets known as Cresswell points; scrapers; burins or lithic flakes; flint and bone awls; and a bone needle. Flint rarely occurs in Wales other than in drifts, or as small pebbles on beaches. Flint tools would therefore have to have been brought to Gower from other areas, such as those now known as southern or eastern England, or Antrim, either as finished tools or as incomplete, or unworked, nodules. Remains of red fox, Arctic fox, brown bear, tundra vole, and possibly reindeer, were found at the same level as the Upper Palaeolithic tools, providing evidence of the climate c. 12,000 BP. Other animal remains excavated during the 19th century, which may predate the Late glacial finds, include mammoth, woolly rhinoceros, red deer and giant deer.</p><br>
<p>Several finds date to the Bronze Age, including a bronze socketed axe, two human skeletons, and sherds of pottery from burial urns and other vessels.</p><br>
<p>Kallipefki  is a village located on a plateau on the west side of the lower Mount of Olympus, in the prefecture of Larissa and the municipality of Gonni. Kallipefki has a population of about 540 and is located 1.054 metres  above sea level. It is about 9 kilometers far from ancient Leivithra, 23 kilometers far from the town of Gonni, 58 kilometers from Larissa and 130 kilometers from Thessaloniki.</p><br>
<p>The name derives from the word "kalli" which means fair/good and "pefko" which means pine, due to the beautiful pine forests that surrounds it. The old name of the village before 1927 was "Nezeros", which probably derives from the Slavic word "ezer", which means lake. The soil of the plateau of Kalipefki that is fit for cultivation today was created in 1911 after the Askouris (Askourida) lake had been drained. The size of the lake was approximately 5.500 acres.</p><br>
<p>Kallipefki was founded in late Roman times and was one of the 10th century AD bishop diocese, dependent on the bishop of Larissa. Due to its strategic location in the lower Olympus mountain, it became an important position of Greek resistance ("thieves") during the Turkish occupation.</p><br>
<p>In Kallipefki was born in 1760 Stergios Hatzikostas, a trader who lived in Vienna who is most known for being the editor, publisher and friend of Rigas Feraios.</p><br>

<p>In Kallipefki is held every two years the "Olympus Storytelling Festival", a collaboration of the University of Thessaly, the Hellenic Group of Storytelling Friends (POFA) and the Cultural Association of Kallipefki (MESAK).</p><br>
<p>The Ruston USO is located in Ruston, LA. The address is 212 N Trenton St. Suite #1, and is in the Historic District of Downtown Ruston, Louisiana USA. This building served as the USO center from 1943-1945. It served mostly Navy officers who were stationed at Louisiana Tech University who were in the V-12 program. The USO was run by Mrs. Glasgow, and Mrs. Caroline Lewis also worked there, while Mr. Alex T. Hunt served as Director. There were several dances held there for soldiers, and there was even a wedding. There was a ping-pong table, piano, and a lot of chairs and desks so that soldiers could write home. There was one Sunday evening when there was a door count of 1400 soldiers! The building was originally a movie theater that was converted into 2 storefronts. For 50 years after the closing of the USO, this building housed several shoe stores. In 1998, Kevin Hawkins of Hawkins Photography refurbished the building and in 2011 the property was listed on the Historical Register through the US Dept of Interior.</p><br>
<p>Rancho Estelle was the home of James Sublett, one of the first large-scale farmers in the Rio Grande valley of Texas, within what is now Big Bend National Park. Prior to founding the ranch, Sublett and his partner, Clyde Buttrill, farmed the bottomlands along the river in the area of what is now known as Castolon or La Harmonia, downstream from the later ranch. After the partnership with Buttrill broke up, Sublett bought four sections of land, initially calling it Grand Canyon Farms, and later Rancho Estelle.</p><br>
<p>Most of the existing structures are in ruins. The chief structures include the Sublett Farm House, a one-story adobe house with a cane and viga roof and a porch at the front. The house consists only of two rooms separated by a hall. Other structures include a small house for farm workers, similar to the Sublett house, a single-room adobe shed and a stone house for farm workers, with two apartments and a day room. The most substantial structure is the Dorgan Residence, a 1,200 ft&sup2; adobe and stone house of one story for Sublett&#39;s son-in-law. The interior features a large living room and three smaller rooms. The fireplace supports the roof, and is constructed of petrified wood.</p><br>
<p>Rancho Estelle was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 3, 1974.</p><br>
<p>Independence is a ghost town in the USA state of Colorado. It is located just off State Highway 82 in the eastern corner of Pitkin County, below the Continental Divide. It was the first settlement established in the Roaring Fork Valley, after gold was struck in the vicinity on Independence Day, July 4, 1879, hence its name. In 1973 it was recognized as a historic district and listed on the National Register of Historic Places as Independence and Independence Mill Site, one of two ghost towns in the county so recognized. It has also been known historically by other names—Chipeta, Mammoth City, Mount Hope, Farwell, Sparkill and Hunter&#39;s Pass.</p><br>
<p>Like other early settlements in the upper Roaring Fork Valley, it lost population over the course of the decade as Aspen emerged as the ideal location for commerce in the region, and then became the county seat. It was never able to overcome the severe winters that resulted from its location at a high elevation in the mountains, and at the end of the 19th century all but one of the remaining residents abandoned Independence en masse after a particularly heavy snowstorm to settle in Aspen.</p><br>
<p>It has been a ghost town since at least 1912. The remaining structures, all log cabins of various sizes, are now on land partially in White River National Forest. It is one of the few abandoned mining camps in the state where any buildings are left. In the late 20th century they were restored and interpretive materials added.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>Independence is located 13.5 mi east of Aspen along Highway 82, at 10,830 ft above sea level in the narrow, steep valley of the headwaters of the Roaring Fork River, a tributary of the Colorado. Highway 82 passes by the townsite on the north wall of the valley. Independence Pass, at the Continental Divide, is four miles (6.4 km) to the east along the highway. The land is open and cleared, with some wooded portions on the comparatively level ground next to the river.</p><br>
<p>The land on the upper part of the slope is owned by the United States Forest Service, and is in the White River National Forest. The valley walls rise steeply to 12,703 ft Independence Mountain to the south in the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness and 13,301 ft Geissler Mountain in the Hunter–Fryingpan Wilderness to the north. The portion of Independence closer to the river is on private land owned by the Loughren Trust.</p><br>
<p>The remaining buildings are located in a 40 acre area along the north slope down to the river, on land owned by the Loughren Trust. A total of 26 remain in some form; of those, eight are intact and standing. All are log cabins of varying sizes, some without roofs. The rest have just left foundations.</p><br>
<p>The two are grouped roughly around two areas: the former townsite, and the former mill, roughly 0.3 mi apart. The townsite is an area of 17 acre with 19 buildings and 9 foundations; the mill has the remaining nine in a 4.3 acre area. A network of dirt paths allows visitors to walk around the site.</p><br>
<p>One cabin, towards the west end of the site, has been fully restored into a modern residence. It is called the Intern Cabin, since it housed one who lived at the site during the summers to maintain it and offer interpretive tours to visitors. Another large surviving cabin is believed to have served as one of the settlement&#39;s general stores. Further west, just below Highway 82, is the large site of the former Farwell Mill, with some supporting timbers still visible.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>In 1879 prospectors began heading west from Leadville over the Divide and into the Roaring Fork Valley, drawn by reports of vast mineral deposits there. On July 4 of that year, miners at a small camp just below the Divide struck gold. They named it the Independence claim after the holiday, and soon a small tent city developed on the site. Reports reached Leadville, where some earlier prospectors had retreated following hostility from the Ute Native American tribe that had led Colorado governor Frederick Pitkin to issue an order barring any European settlers from crossing the Divide. Despite that edict, more settlers came to the growing community, the first European settlement in the valley. The miners worked out a primitive government called a mining district to protect not only their claims but those of others who had retreated to Leadville.</p><br>
<p>By the next year Independence had reached a population of 150, with some permanent buildings beginning to replace the original tents. Two other camps had been established further down the valley—Ute City just above the junction of the Roaring Fork and Castle Creek, and Ashcroft (originally Chloride), 10 miles (16 km) up Castle Creek from the junction. In 1881 a group of investors from Leadville called the Farwell Consolidated Mining Company bought up all the mining claims around the settlement, and established a stamping mill and sawmill. A stage road, the predecessor of Highway 82, was built from Leadville over the Divide. With the trip from that city to the other mining towns further down the valley taking 2–5 days, Independence also did business as an overnight stage stop.</p><br>
<p>Two years after the first gold was struck, Independence was a prosperous mining town of 500. It had seven restaurants, 24 retail establishments, three saloons and the Miner, a local newspaper. Over the next two years Farwell&#39;s mines produced $190,000 ($ in modern dollars) worth of gold.</p><br>
<p>Despite this economic supremacy, Independence lost its bid to be the seat of the newly created Pitkin County to the last of the original mining settlements in the valley, Ute City, now renamed Aspen after the abundance of that tree in the area. Independence&#39;s growth continued apace. In 1882 it had 1,500 residents, 47 businesses, three post offices, five saloons and two boarding houses.</p><br>
<p>That year would prove to be the peak of Independences boom times. Gold production dropped to just $2,000 ($ in modern dollars) in 1883 as most of the early veins were worked out. Miners and other residents began leaving Independence for Aspen. The county seat had more economic opportunities, since several mining companies supported by wealthy Eastern investors were in town and its mines produced silver, which the federal government was required to buy under the Sherman Silver Purchase Act to support the dollar. Aspen also had a milder climate—at Independences high elevation, the town was under heavy snow cover from late October to mid-May every year. (Even today, Highway 82 is closed during that time period, rendering Independence inaccessible by automobile for those months.)</p><br>
<p>By 1888 the towns population had declined to 150 inhabitants. Later that year the first railroads reached Aspen, greatly reducing the stage traffic over the Divide, another pillar of the local economy. Five years later, the end of Aspens boom, with the Sherman Acts repeal in response to the Panic of 1893, made it even more difficult for Independence to endure. Finally, in winter of 1899, seven severe snowstorms cut the town off from the outside world for long periods of time. Residents ran out of food and other supplies, and when another storm hit, one of the worst in the states history, all but one decided to evacuate. Tearing the 10 – siding planks off their houses, they used them as cross-country skis for the trip down the valley to Aspen. They humorously billed their escape as the "Hunter Pass Tenderfoot Snowshoe Club Race", with an entry fee of one ham sandwich each.</p><br>
<p>They never returned to Independence. Despite a brief resurgence in prospecting in 1907–08, by 1912 the village was completely abandoned. That year the Farwell Stamp Mill caught fire. Most of what remained was taken for use as building materials elsewhere. It and the other buildings were left to deteriorate, although some of the mining claims remained active at least up to the time of its listing on the National Register.</p><br>
<p>In its heavy winters, the site was still vulnerable to avalanches, particularly down the south side of the valley, which had been deforested to open up mines. In the 1930s the Colorado Women&#39;s Club organized a program which used Civilian Conservation Corps labor to replant the slopes and end the avalanche danger. It was the first preservation effort at Independence. Later in the century, after its listing on the Register, the Aspen Historical Society and other groups worked with the USA Forest Service to restore the log cabins, build the path network, add interpretive plaques and pay for an intern to live there during the summer months.</p><br>
<p>Lovewell Pond is a sizable body of water located in southeastern Fryeburg, Maine. It has a moderately developed shoreline with approximately 75-80 buildings, not including approximately 35 others with access rights to the pond&#39;s shoreline.</p><br>
<p>Lovewell Pond is the second largest pond in Oxford County. It is about 1,120 acre, slightly smaller than Kezar Pond, which is about 1,299 acre. Lovewell Pond does, however, fluctuate largely in size due to its annual flooding phenomenon. It is the drainage basin for many small streams including Fight Brook and Mill/Wards Brook, but mainly the Saco River, which acts as both an inlet and outlet for the pond. When the Saco River floods, the water, which normally flows out, reverses direction and flows into the pond, causing it to rise. Lovewell Pond has an actual drainage area of about 3,101 acre. This flooding is an unusual characteristic for a pond.</p><br>
<p>Lovewell Pond has a maximum depth of 45 ft during dry season, but can increase by as much as 10 ft, depending on how high the water rises during rainy periods. The water is normally lowest in the summer (August) and highest in the spring (April).</p><br>

<h2>Wildlife</h2><br>
<p>Lovewell Pond supports many species of warm water fish, including smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, white perch, yellow perch, chain pickerel, pumpkinseed sunfish, minnows, brown trout, lake whitefish, rainbow smelt, burbot (cusk), hornpout (bullhead), golden shiner, common shiner, fallfish (chub), white sucker, and American eel. There are also a few species of turtle and water snake in the pond.</p><br>
<p>An important issue that is handled with care and effort is the loon population. There have been, and continue to be, many attempts at stabilizing and increasing the loon count on Lovewell Pond, as well as countless other ponds in the Northeast. According to first-hand accounts, there are only about 4-6 adult loons on Lovewell Pond and a few chicks. Residents of the pond have hand-built floating nests for the loons to lay their eggs on, in hopes of creating a better chance of survival. Pine Island, the pond&#39;s larger island of two, has been closed to the public to create a sanctuary for the loons.</p><br>
<h2>Public access</h2><br>
<p>There is a state-owned boat ramp located at the southeastern corner of the pond, off of Route 113 across from the Eastern Slopes Regional Airport. This ramp is open to the public, and all boats that enter the pond are examined for foreign invasive plant remains from other bodies of water. Lovewell Pond is highly monitored and maintained to prevent invasive plant species from growing and spreading.</p><br>
<h2>Evergreen Spring</h2><br>
<p>Alongside Lovewell Pond, off Route 113, lies Evergreen Spring. This spring is owned and operated by Nestlé and provides water for the Poland Spring water bottling company. The Lovewell Pond Corporation has had several arguments with Nestlé over their being allowed to take so much water. It was thought to lower the ground water level, therefore reducing the amount of fresh water entering the pond. Nestlé won the battles and has not changed their obtaining habits.</p><br>

<p>Pocahontas Mounds (22 HI 500) is an archaeological site from the Plaquemine Mississippian culture in Hinds County, Mississippi, dating from 800 to 1300 CE. Two mounds from the site were added to the NRHP on two separate occasions, Pocahontas Mound A on November 25, 1969 as NRIS number 69000365 and Pocahontas Mound B on April 11, 1972 as NRIS number 72000694.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The site consists of two mounds, a rectangular platform mound and a mortuary mound, and an associated village area. The site was occupied from 800 to 1300 CE by peoples of the Coles Creek and Plaquemine Mississippian cultures, although evidence found during excavations in 2004 showed that the site was occupied briefly in the Middle-Late Archaic period about 4000-1000 BCE. The platform mound, Mound A, is about 175 ft in width and 22 ft in height. It was described in the late 1930s by archaeologist James A. Ford as being 250 ft by 350 ft at its base and 25 ft in height. Archaeological investigations found the remains of a typical Mississippian-period thatched, clay-plastered log-post structure on the mounds summit, which was once a ceremonial temple or residence of a chief. Located 1,200 ft northwest of Mound A is Mound B, a steep-sided conical mound 75 ft in diameter and 10 ft in height.</p><br>
<p>At the time of Ford&#39;s writing Mound B was included within the grounds of a local school and could not be excavated.</p><br>
<p>New excavations took place in June 2004 under the direction Jeffrey Alvey for the Cobb Institute of Archaeology and funded by the Mississippi Department of Transportation. In 2008 a roadside park was opened at Mound A as a combined rest stop area and educational center explaining the site’s cultural and historical importance.</p><br>
<h2>Location</h2><br>
<p>The site is used as a roadside park along USA Route 49, near its junction with Interstate 220.</p><br>
<p>Lake Letta is a natural freshwater lake in Highlands County, Florida. It has a 478 acres surface area. It is bounded on the east and north by Florida State Highway 17, on the southeast by Lake Letta Drive, on the south by citrus orchards, on the west by Little Lake Bonnet and a golf course and on the northwest by pastures. It is connected to Little Lake Bonnet by a canal. Lake Letta is about 0.6 mi southwest of the city limits of Avon Park, Florida. Residences, along Highway 17 and Lake Letta Drive, line most of the east and southeast sides of Lake Letta. Lake Letta RV Park is across Highway 17 from the lake in the middle of its east side.</p><br>
<p>Lake Letta has public boat ramp on its north side, just off Highway 17. Fishing is allowed; one posting on the Hook and Bullet website says the lake has sturgeon, warmouth and blue catfish. However, this lake has no public swimming areas.</p><br>
<p>The Lower Lake or Chhota Talaab is a lake in Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh state of India. Along with the Upper Lake, it forms the Bhoj Wetland.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The lake was built by creating in 1794 to beautify the city. The construction was commissioned by Chote Khan, a minister of Nawab Hayat Muhammad Khan Bahadur. A number of earlier wells were merged in this lake.</p><br>
<p>The bridge that separates the Lower Lake and the Upper Lake is called "Pul Pukhta" or Lower Lake bridge. The lower lake has also been mentioned as "Pukhta-Pul Talao" in literature.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>The Lower Lake is located to the east of the Upper Lake. An earthen dam separates the two lakes. The two lakes are built in a terraced manner, the lowest level of the Upper Lake is just below the highest level of the Lower Lake.</p><br>
<p>The Lower Lake has an area (water spread) of 1.29, and its catchment area is 9.6 km². The lake receives subsurface seepage from the Upper Lake. In the 1850s, the maximum and minimum depths of the lake were 11.7 m and 6.16 m respectively. As of 2011, the maximum depth was 10.7m.</p><br>
<p>The Lower Lake does not have any fresh water source; it receives seepage water from the Upper Lake and drainage from 28 sewage-filled nallahs. It drains into the Patra rivulet, which joins Halali River, a small tributary of the Betwa River.</p><br>
<h2>Pollution</h2><br>
<p>The Lower Lake suffers from pollution due to drainage from sewage-filled nallahs, lack of fresh water source and commercial washing of clothes. The entire lake is eutrophic, and its water is not suitable for drinking.</p><br>
<p>Dhünn is a 40 km-long river of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Its main source is near Wipperfürth in the Bergisches Land area. It runs in south-westerly direction, and its mouth into the river Wupper is near Leverkusen, appr. 10 km north of Cologne.</p><br>
<h2>Renaturation</h2><br>
<p>By diverting the river bed of the Dhünn around the Sensenhammer weir in April 2010 it was declared the first barrier-free river in North Rhine-Westphalia. This means that the 24 km-long stretch of the river from the mouth into the Wupper to the Großen Dhünn dam is accessible without obstacles for fish and microbes. Fish can now migrate again freely to their spawning grounds.</p><br>

<p>Diestelbach is a river in the district of Lippe in the eastern part of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Also known as the Diestel, it is a tributary of the Emmer river of Lower Saxony, Germany.</p><br>
<h2>Course</h2><br>
<p>The source of the Diestelbach is 250 m above sea level on the 426 m high Winterberg hill in the city forest of Blomberg in North Rhine-Westphalia. Flowing west in the direction of Blomberg, the river then curves southward from Blomberg by Borkhausen where it is fed by the Königsbach. From here the Diestelbach flows southeast until Nessenberg where it joins the Emmer at 35.2 km west of Schieder-Schwalenberg at a height of 123 m above sea level.</p><br>

<p>The Diestelbach is moderately polluted by outflows from the Blomberg wastewater treatment facility and the timber industry in Blomberg. This pollution reaches the Diestelbach via the Königsbach river.</p><br>
<p>Hillebach is a river of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.</p><br>
<p>The Hillebachstausee rises in the Natural Park Sauerland Rothaargebirge about 1 km south of the border to the north-west part of Hessen and the local Upland. Its source is on the southeast edge of the 804.9 m high Hille head that rises north of Küstelberg, a west-north-west of the town of Medebach. It is located in the district Küstelberg to approximately 692.5 m. East above the source leads at a location at 693.5 meters above sea level path Telle past the Rothaarsteig.</p><br>
<p>The brook flows - by source-level leaving the Natural Park Sauerland Rothaar - in predominantly north-westerly direction. Then it flows - after right-sided open out the zoom flowing also from Hillekopf welding Micke - Hildfeld, a northern district of Winterberg, near the southern outskirts. Southwest of the village opens a referred to in underflow Grone Springebach who comes from the south towards the town of Grönenbach. Then happened the stream to about 837 m high mountain Clemens, the highest and dominant mountain at cup-shaped river valley, and located on the lower part of its western flank cottages.</p><br>
<p>Shortly thereafter flows through the Hillebachstausee the lying below the Rimberg (764.5 m) Hillestausee at low altitudes, a northern district of Winterberg, a few hundred meters distance downstream - west of the village hall (Schützenhalle) - at about 519 m altitude there coming in from the south Rhein-Ruhr tributary to open.</p><br>
<p>Kleine Aa  is a river of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, a tributary of the Aabach. Thus it is part of the Rhine-Weser River Basin.</p><br>
<p>The Kleine Aa rises in East Westphalia 7 km north of the border to Hessen between Bad Wunnenberg the north-northwest and Marsberg in the east on the border between Briloner plateau to the west and the north Sintfeld. Its source located 4.5 km west of Marsberg or about 5.4 km north-east of Brilon Madfeld district. Its water enters small wetland, located approximately 650 m northeast of the skull (502.6 m above sea level. NHN) and about 50 m covers (distances depending crow) north-northeast of the skull stone on average 465 meters above sea level.</p><br>
<p>A few hundred meters northeast of Bach origin springs from the Karpke ( "Cold Siepen"), not far south are the northern boundary of the nature park Diemelsee and the headwaters of Dütlingsbachs. The "Sister Bach" Kleine Aa, the Great Aa, rises about 1.5 km south-west of its source.</p><br>
<p>The Kleine Aa flows through the landscape in the transition region of Upper Marsberger Forest in the southeast and Madfelder forest in the west, and Fürstenberger forest in the northeast. Accompanied by forest and trails of Bach runs predominantly north, where he fed a total of seven ponds and a former glassworks happened between the second and third of these still waters.</p><br>
<p>Finally, the Kleine Aa opens approximately 3 km south of Furstenberg on 345.7 m in the Südostarm the traversed by Aabach Aabachstausees. Since establishment of this small reservoir the last almost 800 m flow path of the stream to its former confluence with the Aabach are flooded by waters of the dam. Total Kleine Aa is therefore about 6.3 km long.</p><br>
<p>Fort McKinley is a former United States Army coastal defense fort on Great Diamond Island, Maine in Casco Bay, which operated from 1873 to 1947. It was named for President William McKinley. It included a sub-post, Fort Lyon, on Cow Island, just north of Great Diamond Island. Fort Lyon was named for Nathaniel Lyon. Both forts were part of the Coast Defenses of Portland, renamed the Harbor Defenses of Portland in 1925, a command which protected Portlands port and naval anchorage 1895-1950. In 1946 Fort Lyon was closed and turned over to the City of Portland. After Fort McKinleys closure it was transferred to the United States Navy, which sold the site  to private interests in 1961. The Fort McKinley Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<h3>Construction and armament</h3><br>
<p>The Board of Fortifications, often called the Endicott Board, recommended a comprehensive program of new fortifications in 1885. Forts McKinley and Lyon were among the results. Construction on Fort McKinley began in 1897 and was complete by 1906. Fort McKinley totaled 111 acre resulting from two land purchases in 1873 and 1901. The fort was divided by Diamond Cove into a North Fork and a South Fork. The entirety of Cow Island was acquired by the government in 1873; Fort Lyon was built on 22 acre of it and was complete by 1909.</p><br>

<p>At Fort McKinley, facilities supporting an underwater minefield were built on the South Fork and at Fort Lyon; the 3-inch guns at both forts were intended to defend the minefield against minesweepers. Construction of the original barracks and administration buildings at Fort McKinley began in 1902-1903 and lasted through 1906. This construction phase was sized for four companies. Four 109-man barracks were constructed along with four sets of duplex Non-Commissioned Officers (NCO) quarters, six sets of duplex officers quarters, three sets of single family officers&#39; quarters and various administration and support buildings to accommodate a post of this size.</p><br>
<p>A few buildings were built between 1905 and 1908, and a significant expansion to accommodate seven companies began in 1908-1909 and was largely complete by the end of 1910. The expansion included two additional barracks, one of which was a double barracks, four more sets of duplex NCO quarters and a ten-man Bachelor Officers&#39; Quarters (BOQ). At this point, the fort had the capacity for 17 officers, 18 married NCOs, and 788 enlisted men. The existing hospital and guardhouse were expanded in 1910 to accommodate the increased population.</p><br>
<h3>World War I</h3><br>
<p>During World War I, the forts were manned by artillery companies of the Coast Artillery Corps and Maine National Guard troops. After the American entry into World War I in 1917, the forts were partially disarmed so the guns could be shipped to the Western Front in France. Four of the eight mortars of Battery Ingalls were removed for conversion to railway artillery. This was done with most mortar batteries; with four mortars in each pit the reloading time was excessive due to crowding of men and equipment. So, mortars were removed to leave two mortars per pit. The mortars were not shipped to France; most railway mortars remained in reserve through World War II. Some of Fort McKinleys 8-inch guns were dismounted for railway conversion, but never left the fort and were later remounted. The two 6-inch guns of Battery Carpenter and Fort Lyons three six-inch guns were removed to be mounted on field carriages; all were shipped to France and later returned to the United States, with Battery Carpenter&#39;s guns returning to Fort McKinley. The Fort Lyon guns were eventually used elsewhere on new mountings in World War II. A history of the Coast Artillery in World War I states that none of the regiments in France equipped with 6-inch guns completed training in time to see action before the Armistice.</p><br>
<p>In 1920 Fort McKinley lost both of its 3-inch gun batteries due to obsolescence; this was part of a general removal of all Driggs-Seabury M1898 3-inch guns and their unique masking parapet mountings from service. The masking parapet mount was a simple form of disappearing mount; on 3-inch guns it could not be retracted in action and was locked in the up position after a few years in service.</p><br>
<h3>World War II</h3><br>
<p>In 1940-1941 both forts were expanded to deal with the influx of draftees; a draft was instituted shortly after the outbreak of World War II in Europe in September 1939 and the National Guard was mobilized, which included Coast Artillery Corps units. Construction at Fort McKinley added six temporary enlisted barracks, one temporary officers&#39; barracks, two mess halls, two administration buildings and two recreation buildings. This increased the post capacity to 62 officers, 18 married NCOs, 1438 enlisted men and 25 animals in Jun 1941. In late 1941 Fort Lyon added three new temporary buildings, a wharf, and utilities to house 130 enlisted men and 6 officers. The three buildings included a 172-man mess hall, a 74-man enlisted barracks and a modified barracks to house 56 enlisted men and 6 officers. An antiaircraft battery was also deployed there. At this time the major units garrisoning the Harbor Defenses of Portland were the 8th Coast Artillery Regiment of the Regular Army and the 240th Coast Artillery Regiment of the Maine National Guard. However, most guns of the two forts would soon be removed and scrapped. A modernization centered on Battery Steele on Peaks Island was implemented, and by the end of 1943 all guns and mortars had been removed from both forts, except the two 6-inch guns at Battery Carpenter and three 3-inch guns at Battery Abbot. With little threat to the East Coast from surface ships by 1944, the coast defenses were drawn down and the Coast Artillery regiments reduced to battalions or their personnel were reassigned. Shortly after the war the Army withdrew from Forts McKinley and Lyon and the properties were sold or transferred.</p><br>
<h2>Present</h2><br>
<p>Fort McKinley has been redeveloped as a gated community named Diamond Cove. Most of the batteries are heavily overgrown and on private property. Cow Island was redeveloped beginning in 2000 as a camp for environmental, adventure, and leadership development programs.</p><br>
<p>Lake of the Woods is a natural lake near the crest of the Cascade Range in the Fremont–Winema National Forest in southern Oregon in the United States. The lake covers 1,146 acre. It was named by Oliver C. Applegate in 1870. Today, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife manages the lakes fishery. The small unincorporated community of Lake of the Woods is located on the east shore of the lake. Lake of the Woods is one of southern Oregons most popular outdoor recreation sites.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Lake of the Woods was named by Oregon pioneer Oliver C. Applegate while he was building a road near the lake in 1870. Applegate also built a cabin at the south end of the lake, becoming the area&#39;s first resident.</p><br>
<p>Lake of the Woods became part of the Cascade Forest Reserve in 1898. The lake was managed as part of that Cascade Reserve until 1908, when the area was transferred to the Crater National Forest. The United States Forest Service issued the first residential use permit to the Elden cabin near Lake of the Woods in 1916. In 1920, the Forest Service built a public campground along the lake shore. The site was very popular, with 1,850 summer visitors recorded the first year it was open. In 1923, the road into the lake area was improved, and a second campground was built to accommodate the increasing number of recreational visitors. In 1926, the Forest Service issued a permit allowing the Lake of the Woods Recreation Company to build a resort at the lake.</p><br>
<p>In 1932, Lake of the Woods and the lakeside campgrounds were transferred to the Rogue River National Forest along with the surrounding forest. In the mid-1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps began work at the Lake of the Woods Ranger Station at the north end of the lake. Civilian Conservation Corps crews built an office, residences, and a number of work buildings at the ranger station. All of the buildings except for the ranger station&#39;s barn were constructed in the Cascadian rustic architectural style. The Civilian Conservation Corps also expanded and improved the road network around the lake.</p><br>

<p>In 1937, there were 120 summer homes around Lake of the Woods. The next year, power lines brought electricity to the area for the first time. By 1948, the number of summer homes at the lake had grown to 200. There were also four organizational summer camps located around the lake. In 1951, the resort was destroyed in a fire, but was quickly rebuilt and reopened for business. The number of recreational visitors continued to increase throughout the 1950s, with as many as 5,000 people visiting the lake on some weekends. In 1958, Oregon Route 140 was completed, providing residents of Klamath Falls and Medford with easy access to the lake.</p><br>
<p>In 1961, the Forest Service transferred Lake of the Woods and the surrounding forest to the newly formed Winema National Forest. In 2002, the Winema National Forest was administratively combined with the Fremont National Forest, becoming the Fremont–Winema National Forest. Today, Lake of the Woods remains a very popular recreation site. The lake and surrounding forest is managed by the Klamath Ranger District, and its fishery is managed by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.</p><br>
<h2>Watershed</h2><br>
<p>Lake of the Woods is located near the crest the Cascade Range in southern Oregon, 7 mi southeast of Mount McLoughlin. Most of the lake water comes from groundwater seepage; however, there are also three tributary creeks. Rainbow Creek is a year-round tributary, while Billie Creek and Dry Creek have only seasonal flows. The lake&#39;s only outlet flows into Great Meadow, a wetland at the northeast end of the lake. Great Meadow drains into Seldom Creek, which flows into Upper Klamath Lake. Lake of the Woods only discharges water in the spring. During the drier summer and fall months, lake water is lost only through groundwater seepage and evaporation.</p><br>
<p>The watershed that drains into Lake of the Woods covers 26 square miles and is covered by a mixed conifer forest that receives an average of 30 - of precipitation annually. The primary tree species in the watershed are Douglas-fir and white fir. The watershed also has some ponderosa pine, lodgepole pine, and aspen. While logging and reforestation have affected forest composition, approximately 75 percent of the trees in the watershed are between 80 and 800 years old. As a result, much of the watershed is covered by a dense forest canopy.</p><br>
<h2>Lake environment</h2><br>
<p>Lake of the Woods is a natural lake that covers 1,146 acre. It is approximately 2.75 mi long and 0.75 mi wide. The lake has an average depth of 27 ft with a maximum depth of 55 ft near the western shore. The lake&#39;s bottom is 52 percent detritus, 19 percent sand, 15 percent vegetation, 11 percent rock, and 3 percent mud.</p><br>
<p>There have been a number of studies of lake&#39;s environment and water quality. Oregon State University published studies of the lake environment in 1972 and 1985. In 1992, Rogue Community College began monitoring water quality in the lake. Some of the parameters that are regularly tested include depth, temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, transmissivity, turbidity, Secchi depth, chlorophyll, bacteria, total phosphorus, orthophosphate, alkalinity, and total dissolved solids. In 1996, the United States Geological Survey conducted a high-resolution acoustic survey and drilled sediment cores from the lake. In 2002, Portland State University reported the finding of the volunteer monitors in their Lake Watch program. The monitors found some variation in the water transparency and seasonal patterns of hypolimnetic oxygen depletion. In 2004, the Fremont–Winema National Forest studied the impact of recreational residence permits on the lake environment. The assessment identified the early signs of shoreline erosion. While these studies produced some cautionary finding, taken overall, they indicate that the Lake of the Woods ecosystem is handling the stress of human use relatively well.</p><br>
<p>While the water quality in Lake of the Woods has not been significantly degraded by heavy recreational use, additional development could do so. To prevent this, the Forest Service began taking proactive steps to preserve the lakes water quality in the mid-1990s. These actions included closing some roads near the lake, funding a number of road drainage improvement projects, and initiating a soil conservation education program. The Forest Service also encourages cabin owners to install new septic systems and actively promotes the use of low phosphate detergents in the Lake of the Woods community. It also created the Dry Creek Riparian Reserve to restrict development. When studies indicated that increasing use of motorized watercraft was contributing to shoreline erosion, the Forest Service amended Lake of the Woods recreational residence permits to require permit holders to plant native vegetation along the shoreline of the lake and prohibited the removal of naturally fallen trees along the shoreline. So far, these measures have been successful in protecting the lakes water quality and minimizing shoreline erosion.</p><br>
<h2>Ecology</h2><br>
<p>Due to a lack of historic data for Lake of the Woods, the natural conditions of the lake cannot be established. However, the lake&#39;s trophic state is in the oligotrophic to mesotrophic range.</p><br>
<p>The first fish survey at Lake of the Woods was conducted in 1941. However, the lake had been regularly stocked with non-native fish for many years before the survey, so it is impossible to know what fish species were native to the lake. In 1947, researchers from Oregon State University interviewed several people who had fished at the lake in the late 19th century, before any non-native fish were introduced into the lake. Based on those interviews, the researchers concluded that rainbow trout, tui chub, and possibly one or more sucker species may have been native to the lake. However, a University of Michigan study done for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife concluded that there were no sucker species native to the lake. That report suggested that the Great Basin redband trout was probably the only species native to the lake.</p><br>
<p>Lake of the Woods was stocked for the first time in 1913. This introduced hatchery-breed rainbow trout into the lake. This stocking produced a decade of good trout fishing. In 1922, the Oregon State Game Commission (a predecessor to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife) stocked the lake with largemouth bass, black crappie, bluegill, yellow perch, warmouth, pumpkinseed sunfish, brown bullheads, carp, and perhaps suckers. The yellow perch quickly became the lakes dominant species, out-competing the trout for both food and habitat. Between 1925 and 1935, brook trout, cutthroat trout, chinook salmon, coho salmon, and steelhead were also introduced into the lake. No additional rainbow trout were stocked until 1946. The trout population remained relatively stable until about 1938 when the salmonid populations began to decline, probably due to competition from the warm water species combined with limited spawning areas and increasing fishing. Despite the Game Commissions efforts to control the warm water species, their population continued to proliferate while the salmonid species declined. In 1955, the entire lake was poisoned with rotenone, killing all the fish in the lake. The lake was then restocked with rainbow trout, brook trout, and kokanee salmon.</p><br>
<p>In addition to fish, the lake provides habitat for a wide variety of bird species. From the Forest Service campgrounds along the lake shore, birdwatchers can see grebes, ducks, geese, an occasionally common loons. The lake also attracts birds of prey including osprey and bald eagles. In the forest around the lake, there are mountain chickadees, western tanagers, red-breasted nuthatch, yellow-rumped warbler, red crossbills, hermit thrush, golden-crowned kinglet, Stellers jays, gray jays, Vauxs swifts, common nighthawk, hairy woodpeckers, downy woodpeckers, and pileated woodpeckers. The forest is also home to a number of owl species including great horned owls, great gray owls, northern spotted owls, northern saw-whet owls, and northern pygmy-owls.</p><br>
<p>The fir dominated forest around Lake of the Woods is home to numerous mammals, both large and small. The large mammals include mule deer, black-tailed deer, elks, black bears, coyotes, bobcats, and cougars. Some of the small mammals include porcupines, western spotted skunks, striped skunks, martens, minks, long-tailed weasels, snowshoe hares, yellow-bellied marmots, golden-mantled ground squirrels, Douglas squirrels, dusky-footed woodrats, bushy-tailed woodrats, creeping voles, deer mice, and northern pocket gophers.</p><br>
<p>In June each year, the Winema National Forest hosts a week-long summer resource management program for sixty high school students at the Lake of the Woods. The participating student come from Oregon, Washington, and California. The Forest Service gives the attendees the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors while learning about the natural environment. Participants study geology, forestry, fisheries, and wildlife in various environments. They also learn about recreation management, wildfire control, wilderness stewardship, and cultural resources. At the end of the week, the students develop and present a land management plan to demonstrate what they learned.</p><br>
<h2>Recreation</h2><br>
<p>Today, Lake of the Woods is a very popular recreation site. There are 218 summer homes around the lake. All of these homes require Forest Service recreational residence permits. There are two campgrounds with 124 campsites on the east shore of the lake. Aspen Point campground has 60 campsites and Sunset campground has 64 campsites. There are also two day-use areas for swimming and picnicking. There are three organizational camps near the lake. A year-round resort provides two restaurants, a general store open in the summer months, a marina available for boat rentals and moorage in the summer, and 32 rental cabins.</p><br>
<p>During the summer, the lake is a popular place for swimming, fishing, canoeing, boating, and water skiing. There are also trails near the lake for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. In the winter, the lake is used for ice fishing. In 1998, the Forest Service estimated the lake hosted 320,000 recreational visitor days (one person staying at the lake for one day equals one visitor day). The nearby Great Meadows area is now a very popular winter recreation site, especially for snowmobile riders and cross-country skiers. The Forest Service estimated the area had 53,300 winter visitors in 2000. A private development near the lake will add 115 homes, increasing recreational use of the lake.</p><br>
<p>Lake of the Woods Resort is open for 11 months of the year. It is closed for the month of April. It offers 32 cabins and sites for 22 recreational vehicles. In 2011 the Resort took over management of the Forest Service campgrounds by the lake. The main lodge of the resort has a restaurant, general store and gift shop. The resort provides a full service marina with a boat launch, moorages, boat rentals, and motorboat fuel available. There is also an automobile service station at the resort.</p><br>
<h2>Location</h2><br>
<p>Lake of the Woods is located near the crest of the Cascade Mountains in western Klamath County, Oregon. Its elevation is 4,949 ft above sea level. The lake is surrounded by the Fremont–Winema National Forest. Lake of the Woods is 33 mi west of Klamath Falls and 43 mi east of Medford. The small unincorporated community of Lake of the Woods, Oregon, is located on the east shore of the lake, approximately 1/2 mi south of Oregon Route 140. There is a Forest Service visitor center at the historic Lake of the Woods Ranger Station at the north end of the lake, just off Route 140. The visitor center is open during the summer.</p><br>
<p>Thotupola Kanda, also sometimes referred as the Thotupola Peak or Thotupola Mountain, is the third highest mountain is Sri Lanka situated in Nuwara Eliya district 2,357 m above mean sea level. Mountain is placed within the Horton Plains National Park. About two kilometers long trail is there to the top of the mountain that starts few metres away from the Pattipola entrance to the Horton Plains National Park. Most part of the mountain surface is covered with shrubs adapted to the cool and windy climate of Horton Plains National Park. Strobilanthes,Osbeckia and Rhodomyrtus species grown as shrubs are common among them.</p><br>
<h2>Legend</h2><br>
<p>Thotupola Kanda has the meaning of ‘Landing Site’ in Sinhala language which related to a legend of Rama and Ravana. According to the legend, King of India, Rama and his beautiful wife Sita lived in exile in the jungle. Once Ravana kidnapped Rama’s wife Sita and escaped to Sri Lanka. On the way to Sri Lanka plane first landed in Thotupola Kanda which has the meaning of landing site.</p><br>
<p>Hyde Park–Kenwood Historic District is the name of the National Register of Historic Places  district on the South Side of Chicago that includes parts of the Hyde Park and Kenwood community areas of Chicago, Illinois. The northern part of this district overlaps with the officially designated Chicago Landmark Kenwood District. This northern part of the Hyde Park–Kenwood Historic District contains the Chicago home of Barack Obama. The entire district was added to the NRHP on February 14, 1979 and expanded on August 16, 1984 and May 16, 1986. The district is bounded to the north, south, east and west, respectively by 47th Street, 59th Street, Lake Park Avenue and Cottage Groves Avenue. Despite the large amount of property associated with the University of Chicago, the Hyde Park–Kenwood Historic District is mostly residential. The district is considered to be significant for its architecture and education.</p><br>
<p>Among the Hyde Park–Kenwood Historic District&#39;s contributing properties are numerous NRHP listings in Hyde Park: Frank R. Lillie House, Isidore H. Heller House, Amos Jerome Snell Hall and Charles Hitchcock Hall, Arthur H. Compton House, Chicago Pile-1, St. Thomas Church and Convent, Frederick C. Robie House, George Herbert Jones Laboratory and Robert A. Millikan House. No NRHP listings from Kenwood are within the historic districts boundaries. The NRHP-listed University Apartments are also within the district. Additionally, Chicago Pile-1 and Robie House, which are in the district, are two of the four Chicago Registered Historic Places from the original October 15, 1966 NRHP list.</p><br>
<p>Illicks Mill, also known as Peters Mill and Monocacy Milling Co., is a historic grist mill located in Monocacy Park at Bethlehem, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. It was built in 1856, and is a four level, vernacular stone mill building with a heavy timber frame interior. The original building measured approximately 34 by. The building was expanded in the 1880s with a 20 foot addition and the addition of the fourth level and a monitor roof. The mill was formerly the home of the Fox Environmental Center.</p><br>
<p>It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. As of October 2015, the Appalachian Mountain Clubs Mid-Atlantic Conservation Office has occupied a portion of the building, under a lease agreement with the City of Bethlehem. The building is maintained and its uses managed by the City of Bethlehems Parks, Recreation & Public Properties Department.</p><br>
<p>Böse Sieben  is a river of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, flowing through the town Eisleben.</p><br>
<p>The "Böse Sieben" originates from the eastern regions of the Harz, the sources of the river are the Vietzbach (or Goldbach) and the Dippelsbach, which confluence in Ahlsdorf.</p><br>
<p>Beside from that it has 8 tributaries, the Kliebigbach, Goldgrundbach, Pfaffengrundbach, Saugrundbach, Wolferöder Graben, Hünsche Born, Wilder Graben and the Kalte Graben.</p><br>
<p>Because the river has caused many floods after heavy rainfalls it was named "Willerbach" Mansfeldisch for "wild river" in the past. Later in the 19th century it was named "Böse Sieben". It flows through the Süßer See and the Bindersee to the Kernersee, which has no natural outflow.</p><br>
<p>Lehigh Valley Railroad Headquarters Building, also known as the Conrail Building, is a historic office building located at Bethlehem, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. It is a red brick building set on a stone masonry base. The building was built by the Lehigh Valley Railroad in two stages; the ground through third floors were constructed in 1885-1886 and the upper floors and western wing were added in 1889-1890. The building&#39;s style reflects Late Victorian Gothic and Queen Anne influences. The main elevation features two copper bay windows at the corners; one three stories tall and the other one story tall. The former office building now houses apartments.</p><br>
<p>It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.</p><br>
<p>Herman Simon House is a historic home located at Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. It was built in 1902, and is an Indiana limestone dwelling on a granite base in the French Chateau style. It features a four story, semi-circular bay tower and a projecting porch. The rectangular building measures 24 feet wide and 120 feet deep. The building has housed the Easton YWCA beginning in 1930.</p><br>
<p>It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.</p><br>
<p>In the 1980s, the Easton YWCA separated from the national organization and transitioned into the Third Street Alliance for Women and Children. That organization is still using the building as of the end of 2014.</p><br>
<p>Herman Simon was an immigrant from Germany who became wealthy in the manufacturing of silk. He died in 1913.</p><br>
<p>The Sorge is a right affluent of river Eider in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. According to the actual naming, it has a length of 29.4 km. It is formed by the confluence of two streams or small rivers. The shorter one is called Stente. It is the outlet of a lake called Bistensee. Half way it passes the mill&#39;s pond of the hamlet of Stenten. Below this pond it was called "Sorge", too, as late as in official maps printed in the year 2000. The main affluent of Bistensee and the length of this lake included, this top tributary is 11.15 km long. The other top tributary is longer, 15.9 km. Its upper section is called Boklunder Au, the lower one Mühlenau, in 2000 still Mühlenbach. But there is another Mühlenbach , nearby, joining river Sorge from the left  side.</p><br>
<p>From the confluence of its sources, river Sorge mainly flows westward. In the moraine region of Geest, it is crossed by the historical Oxen Way, as Hærvejen is called in Germany. West of it and much more in the marshes west of Tetenhusen, the course of the river underwent great changes since the early 17th century, due to the cultivation efforts of Dutch settlers. Parts of the old course have disappeared, but a significant rest, up river cut off the waterway and called Alte Sorge, is a natural reserve, now.</p><br>
<p>The Mott Archaeological Preserve or Mott Mounds Site  is an archaeological site in Franklin Parish, Louisiana on the west bank of Bayou Macon. It originally had eleven mounds with components from the Marksville, Troyville, Coles Creek, and Plaquemine periods. It was at one time one of the largest mound centers in the Southeast and has one of the largest mounds in Louisiana with a base which cover more than two acres. It was purchased by the Archaeological Conservancy in 2002. and is now used for research and educational purposes.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The site formerly had as many as fourteen mounds, depending on the criteria used to describe a mound. Except for one small outlier to the south all are surrounding an exceptionally large central plaza that is aligned on an east-west axis. The large plaza measures close to 280 m east to west and 175 m north to south. These measurements are about three quarters the size of the Grand Plaza at Cahokia, which is the largest Mississippian culture plaza known. Other large sites from the region during the same time period (such as the Raffman, Winterville, or Holly Bluff) could easily fit their entire sites into the confines of Motts plaza. On the western edge of the plaza is Mound A, the largest at the site and one of the largest in the state and possibly the largest in the Tensas Basin region during the time period it was constructed. It is a platform mound about 90 m by 100 m at its base, 45 m by 60 m at its summit and over 8 m in height. This produces a footprint that covers an area of over two acres. The eastern and southern borders of the plaza are bounded by two other large platform mounds, Mounds F and I respectively. The northern edge of the plaza has four small dome shaped mounds, aligned along a meander scar of Bayou Macon. 700 m south of the mound group is a large village site thought to be contemporaneous with the mounds.</p><br>
<h2>Excavations</h2><br>
<p>A number of archaeologists have undertaken excavations and investigations at the site. The earliest were George Beyer in 1900 and Clarence Bloomfield Moore in 1913. In the mid 1960s researchers from the Lower Mississippi Survey of Harvard University led by Stephen Williams sampled the site and fixed it into the local chronology. They found markers from the Marksville, Coles Creek, and Plaquemine cultures, but with the most intensive habitation being during the Coles Creek period. Site surveys were also conducted in 1976 and in 1992, all of which confirmed this chronological placement. The site was purchased in two acquisitions in 2002 by the Archaeological Conservancy to preserve and protect the site which had been threatened by looting, land leveling, and timber harvesting. It is now known as the Mott Archaeological Preserve and is over 200 acres, making it one of the Conservancy’s largest acquisitions in the Southeastern United States to date. In 2005 Mott Project was begun by Timothy Schilling of Washington University in St. Louis and Tristram R. Kidder of Tulane University.</p><br>
<p>The Whitefield House and Gray Cottage are two historic homes on the Ephrata Tract in Nazareth, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Construction on both buildings began in 1740, by Moravian settlers who moved to Nazareth after the failure of their mission to Native Americans and Europeans in the Savannah, Georgia area, 1735-1740. The two structures were added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 1, 1980. The Ephrata Tract and its buildings are owned by the Moravian Historical Society, and act as the Society&#39;s headquarters.</p><br>
<h2>1740/1743 Whitefield House</h2><br>
<p>The Whitefield House is a stone building measuring 56 feet long and 35 feet wide. It is named for George Whitefield (1714-1770), who hired a group of Moravians from Georgia to build the house as a school for orphaned slaves. Only a foundation was built however, after theological disputes between Whitefield and the Moravians caused the group to purchase the town of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. It was here they established a Moravian community. When Whitefield went bankrupt, the Moravians purchased 5000 acres of land from him, which would later become the town of Nazareth. They completed the Whitefield House in 1743, just in time for it to be used as a home for 32 couples coming over from England. The house has been in Moravian hands for years, and has operated as a place of worship, boarding school, place for mission work, nursery, the Moravian Theological Seminary, and apartments for furloughed missionaries. Currently, the Moravian Historical Society uses the building as its historical museum, administrative offices, and gift shop.</p><br>
<h2>1740 Gray Cottage</h2><br>
<p>The Gray Cottage is a 1 1/2 story log building with a wood shake covered gable roof. Its name possibly comes from its aged gray coloring. It was restored in 1971 to be used as a private residence, and it is the oldest American Moravian building still standing. The log house was built in October 1740 by the Moravians to shelter themselves during the winter. The building has been used a boys and girls school, a choir house for widows, and a nursery. The Moravian Historical Society owns and maintains the building, and rents it out to tenants.</p><br>

<p>The Prairie Creek Site is an archaeological site in the southwestern part of the USA state of Indiana. Located approximately 3 mi north of Washington in Daviess County, it lies along the southern bank of the westward-flowing Prairie Creek, a White River tributary. About 1 mi to the east of the site, the stream leaves the Thousand Acre Woods, a heavily wooded area around a glacial lake; six miles downstream is the creek&#39;s confluence with the White River.</p><br>
<h2>Excavation</h2><br>
<p>In early 1972, a local resident observed the bones of a mastodon along the creekside and reported the finding to the Glenn Black Laboratory of Archaeology at Indiana University Bloomington; before long, university archaeologist Curtis Tomak examined the site, removing portions of the mastodon skeleton and inspecting the stratigraphy of the site. This inspection revealed that the site was heavily stratified, due largely to stream deposits. Tomak led a test excavation at the site on weekends during the final third of 1973, which greatly clarified the stratification present at the site. Fifteen different strata were identified; all were formed mostly of clay, silt, and sand, but the majority of the material was sand. The seventh stratum from the top yielded a wide range of objects, including various stone tools and bones of multiple animal species, including extinct species of the Mylohyus and Castoroides genera. Other strata also yielded animal bones; chief among these was an armadillo shell found in Stratum 9, which at the time of discovery was the northernmost known armadillo shell.</p><br>
<h2>Findings</h2><br>
<p>Besides the range of animal bones, many human artifacts were also found at the site. Stratum 7 yielded twenty-seven lithic flakes, bits of coal, and oxidized sandstone, as well as tree products such as burned wood from ash and maple trees. Other strata yielded fish bones, more wood, a fishhook made of bone, and significantly larger amounts of coal. Although the extinct animal bones are found in the same context as the human artifacts, this is believed to have been the result of erosion and buildup by the stream; they are not believed to be contemporaneous.</p><br>
<h2>Preservation</h2><br>
<p>At the end of the test excavation, Tomak and his team were optimistic about the value of the site; they feared that the mixture caused by the flowing water had greatly reduced the information-yielding potential of the stream&#39;s stratigraphy, but they believed that other areas farther from the bank might be free of water damage. With excavations by the Black Laboratory continuing, the site was eventually revealed to have a Paleoindian component. Now recognized as a leading archaeological site, Prairie Creek was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.</p><br>
<p>The Tamar Wetlands Important Bird Area is a linear stretch of wetland habitat, with an area of 51 km, extending along the upper half of the estuarine Tamar River in northern Tasmania, Australia.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The Important Bird Area (IBA) comprises the open water of the Tamar, with its intertidal mudflats and associated wetland vegetation, from Launceston downstream to Batman Bridge, halfway to the sea. The mudflats are fringed by saltmarsh and extensive reed beds, and the IBA is bordered by a landscape mosaic of farmland and production forests. It includes the 46 km Tamar River Conservation Area and overlaps the Native Point Conservation Reserve. The average maximum temperatures in the region are 13 °C in winter and 24 °C in summer.</p><br>
<h2>Birds</h2><br>
<p>The site has been identified as an IBA by BirdLife International because it supports over 1% of the world populations of chestnut teals and pied oystercatchers. Australasian bitterns have occasionally been recorded there.</p><br>
<p>The Lake of the Woods Ranger Station is a United States Forest Service compound consisting of eight buildings overlooking Lake of the Woods in the Fremont-Winema National Forests of southern Oregon. All of the ranger station structures were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps between 1937 and 1939. Today, the compound serves as a Forest Service work center, and the old ranger station office is a visitor center. The ranger station is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>In the early 20th century, the forest road networks were not well developed. To facilitate work in National Forests, the Forest Service built district ranger stations at strategic locations within the forest to house full-time employees and provide logistics support to fire patrols and project crews working in remote areas of the forest. After World War II, the Forest Service greatly expanded its road network, allowing employees to get to most forest areas within a few hours. As a result, many of the more isolated ranger stations were closed or converted to summer guard stations. The historic Lake of the Woods Ranger Station was established during this early period and is still used by Forest Service crews today.</p><br>
<p>In 1898, the Cascade Forest Reserve was created in southern Oregon. The forest area around Lake of the Woods became part of the reserve. The forest was managed as part of that Cascade reserve until 1908, when the area was transferred to the Crater National Forest. The Forest Service issued the first residential use permit for a private cabin in the Lake of the Woods area in 1916. In 1920, the Forest Service built a public campground at the lake. The site was very popular, with 1,850 summer visitors using the campground the first year it open. In 1923, the road into the Lake of the Woods area was improved. That same year, the Forest Service built a second campground to accommodate the increasing number of people vacationing at the lake. In 1926, the Forest Service issued a permit allowing the Lake of the Woods Recreation Company to build a resort at the lake. During this period, the only Forest Service facility at Lake of the Woods was a small log cabin originally built by a fur trapper, possibly around 1900. In 1929, the Forest Service replaced the cabin with a much larger ranger office at the north end of the lake.</p><br>
<p>In 1932, the Lake of the Woods Ranger Station was transferred to the Rogue River National Forest along with the lake side campgrounds and the surrounding forest. In the mid-1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps built a number of new buildings at the ranger station. All of the structures but one were built in the Cascadian rustic style.</p><br>

<p>In 1961, the Forest Service transferred the Lake of the Woods and the surrounding forest to the newly formed Winema National Forest. In 2002, the Winema National Forest was administratively combined with the Fremont National Forest, becoming the Fremont-Winema National Forests. The Winema National Forest’s Klamath Ranger District still uses the ranger station as a work center while the old office is now a visitor center during the summer months.</p><br>
<p>All eight of the ranger station buildings are historically important and are still in excellent condition. Because the Lake of the Woods Ranger Station is of unique historic value as an early Forest Service ranger station, the compound was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on 8 April 1986. The historic district covers approximately 9.6 acre.</p><br>
<h2>Structures</h2><br>
<p>The Ranger Station Office is a one and a half-story wood-frame building on a concrete foundation with a fieldstone veneer on the foundation&#39;s exterior face. It has a high gabled roof with center cross gable with a stone chimney straddling the roof ridge where the gables join the main roof. The main entrance is recessed under west center gable. There are five stone steps leading to a flagstone porch platform. The porch is supported by four large square timber posts with curving brackets at the top. The rear entry is also located below a gable. The back porch is supported by square timber post with curved bracket at the top. The building’s exterior is covered horizontal clapboard to eave line with vertical boards on all the gable ends above the eaves. There eight-over-eight double-hung sash windows on all four side of the building. Three open pine tree logo cutouts located on the gable end above the front porch. The center tree is larger than the flanking trees. A “Visitor Center” sign is located below the pine tree cutouts. The structure is covered by a texture metal roof. Inside the office, the walls have fluted knotty-pine paneling with plain pine baseboards. There is a stone fireplace with a wooden mantel. The interior floors are wood and the ceiling is covered with acoustical tile with exposed boxed beams.</p><br>
<p>The Ranger Residence is a one and a half-story T-shaped building on a concrete foundation with an exposed fieldstone veneer. It is a wood-frame structure with horizontal clapboard exterior to eave line and vertical boards above the eave line on the gable ends. The building has a high gable roof with large gable on east end and projecting center porch gable on south façade. The original wood-shingles roof has been replaced by textured sheet metal. The front porch is supported by two heavy squared timber posts with curved brackets at the top. Stone steps lead to an open porch with a flagstone surface. The rear entry is on the north side of the building. The covered back porch is supported by a single heavy squared timber post with top bracket matching the posts on the front porch. There is an exterior stone chimney on north gable end of the building. The exterior has simple six-over-six double-hung sash windows. Inside the residence the walls are covered in fluted knotty-pine paneling with plain pine baseboard with wood floors. A stone fireplace is a central feature of the home. The ceiling has exposed boxed beams separated by fiberboard paneling.</p><br>
<p>The Assistant Ranger Residence is a one and a half-story L-shaped building on a concrete foundation with an exposed fieldstone veneer. It is a wood-frame structure with horizontal clapboard exterior to eave line and vertical boards above the eave line on the gable ends. The building as a high gable roof with offset gable on north façade forming the buildings L-shape. The roof covering is textured sheet metal. The open front porch is covered by the projecting gable and is supported by two square timber posts with curved brackets at the top. The porch has flagstone platform accessed by five stone steps. There is a chimney on west side of the building. The exterior has six-over-six double-hung sash windows.</p><br>
<p>There is a Residential Garage next to the ranger residence. It is a rectangular, wood-frame structure on a concrete foundation with exposed stone veneer. The garage has a high gable roof. The exterior walls are covered with horizontal clapboard up to the eave line with vertical boards above the eave line on the gable ends. There are two leaf-hinged doors on north gable end. A single large pine tree cutout is centered above the doors near the top of the gable. The original wood-shingle roof has been replaced by textured sheet metal.</p><br>
<p>The ranger station Crew Bunkhouse also serves as an equipment warehouse. The crew house is a one and a half-story rectangular building. It has a wood-frame structure on a concrete foundation with exposed stone veneer. It has horizontal clapboard exterior to eave line and vertical boards with battens above the eave line on the gable ends. The building has a high gable roof with center porch gable on east façade. The open front porch below the center gable is supported by heavy square timber posts with curved brackets at the top. The front steps and porch platform are concrete. A sliding wooden door next to the main entrance provides access to the warehouse storage area. The exterior has six-over-six double-hung sash windows in combinations with mullion frames. A single large pine tree cutout is centered above the porch on the center entrance gable. There are pine tree cutouts on the north and south gable ends as well. The building has a textured sheet metal roof.</p><br>
<p>The ranger station’s Gas and Lube Building is a wood-frame structure on a concrete foundation with exposed stone veneer. The exterior walls are covered by horizontal clapboards to the eave line with vertical boards on the gable ends above the eave line. It has a high gable roof. The center section of the roof’s northern slope extends out to form shed-porch that covers the gas pump. The main entrance to the shed is also under the porch. The shed extension is supported by two pairs of square timber posts with curving brackets at the top. There is a loading dock on west gable end of the structure. A sliding door provides access to the loading dock. The building has a textured sheet metal roof.</p><br>
<p>There is a small Storage Shed near the gas and lube building. It is a wood-frame structure with a gable roof on a simple concrete foundation. The exterior walls are covered with horizontal clapboard up to the eave line with vertical boards on gable ends above the eave line. The structures only door is on the north side. The structure has simple six-pane single-sash windows. The shed has a textured sheet metal roof.</p><br>
<p>The Barn is the only historic building that is not in the Cascadian Rustic architectural style. It is a one and a half-story rectangular peeled-log structure built on a concrete pier foundation. The barn has high bell-cast gambrel roof covered with wood shingles. The log walls interlock at notched corners. On each side, the logs project out approximately 1 ft beyond the wall corners. The windows on ground floor are single sash of four or six panes. The main door is offset from center at west end of the structure. The door is wood with a six-pane window inset window. There is also a single-leaf horizontal sliding door on east end to allow stock access. On the second floor, there is a two-leaf hay door in the center of the west gable, providing access to the hayloft.</p><br>
<h2>Location</h2><br>
<p>The Lake of the Wood Ranger Station is located in western Klamath County, Oregon, surrounded by the Winema National Forest. The elevation at the site is 4,997 ft above sea level. The area around the ranger station is a dense, multi-storied mixed conifer forest, dominated by Douglas-fir and white fir. There are also has some ponderosa pine, lodgepole pine, and aspen in the surrounding forest. On area receives an average of 30 in to 44 in of precipitation annually.</p><br>
<p>The ranger station is located near the crest of the Cascade Mountains on the north shore of Lake of the Woods. It is 33 mi west of Klamath Falls and 43 mi east of Medford, Oregon. The ranger station is just off Oregon Route 140. All of the historic buildings are located on a narrow strip of land between the south side of the highway and the north shore of the lake. The old ranger station office is now a Forest Service visitor center that is open during the summer.</p><br>
<p>Saint Joseph&#39;s Catholic Church, located at 812 Poplar Street in Macon, Georgia, was listed on the NRHP on July 14, 1971. The church is located in the middle of Downtown Macon and takes up one block.</p><br>
<p>The towers are the tallest twin towers in Macon, and the 3rd tallest building in Macon, Georgia, at 200 feet (60 meters) to the tip. <h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The Neo-Gothic church was the realization of an earlier dream of 50 Catholic parishioners and their first priest, Father James Graham. In 1841, this small group of Catholics had bought a Presbyterian church and started the first catholic parish in Macon, a town incorporated as a city only seventeen years earlier. There were twelve pastors after Farther Graham before another church was acquired. Father James ONeill, the pastor in 1865, found that the church was too small for his growing congregation and purchased another Presbyterian church, this time on Fourth Street between Walnut and Ocmulgee (now Riverside Drive). The Bishop of Savannah sent pastors to St. Josephs Church until 1887, when he asked Jesuits to come from New Orleans to Macon to staff St. Josephs and to take over the school which the Diocese had begun in 1876, Pio Nono College. One Macon thoroughfare (Pio Nono Avenue) is a reminder of the school named after Pope Pius IX. (Pio Nono is Italian for Pius Ninth). In 1888, one year after coming to Macon, the Jesuits were determined to build a church more worthy of the Lord of Hosts. The site of the present church was selected and the negotiations were completed when Father Joseph Winkelried, S.J., became pastor. The foundation of the church was laid in August, 1889. On June 16, 1892, the basement of the church, which was used for services until 1903, was blessed by Bishop Becker. Fourteen years after work on St. Josephs Church had been started, the edifice was dedicated on November 11, 1903. Six bishops from various parts of the country assisted at the ceremony. The November 15, 1903, edition of the Macon Telegraph began its coverage of the Churchs dedication with, If architecture may be fittingly described as frozen music, St. Josephs Church, to be dedicated today, is a symphony.</p><br>
<p>Dunbeg Fort  is a promontory fort built in the Iron Age near the modern village of Ventry in County Kerry, Ireland.</p><br>
<h2>Location</h2><br>
<p>Dunbeg Fort is located on a rocky promontory just south of Slea Head on the Dingle Peninsula, looking over Dingle Bay to the south and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. The cliffs have eroded since it was built, and much of the fort has been lost to the sea.</p><br>
<p>The fort&#39;s wall cut off access to the triangular promontory, which was later occupied by a single large "beehive" hut.</p><br>
<p>Near to the fort there is a group of clocháns, small stone structures also known as beehive huts that seem to have been built around 1000 BC.</p><br>
<p>A visitor center at the site includes audiovisual displays, an information and craft room and a restaurant and café.</p><br>
<p>In January 2014 the fort was closed when much of the western wall of the fort fell into the sea due to storm damage. The Office of Public Works and National Monuments Service sent personnel to investigate damage to the site.</p><br>
<h2>Structure</h2><br>
<p>George Victor Du Noyer described the fort as it was when he visited in 1858.</p><br>
<p>The fort divided the point of a headland from the main shore with a dry stone wall between 15 to 25 ft in width and about 200 ft long from one side of the headland to the other.</p><br>
<p>A passage near the midpoint leads through the wall, which was then 3.5 ft high, 2 ft wide at the top and 3 ft wide at the base. The lintel is 7 ft long. The passage widens to 8 ft inside the fort, with an arched ceiling.</p><br>
<p>In front of the defensive wall there are four parallel ditches separated by three clay and gravel mounds.</p><br>
<p>A pathway leads through this defence to the entrance of the fort.</p><br>
<p>It seems that originally the path ran through a stone passage with a flagged roof as it passed through each mound.</p><br>
<p>Possibly the earth ramparts were built first, then the rock wall added later to strengthen the defences.</p><br>
<p>The wall itself was at first 8 to 11 ft thick, with the landward face later built out to as much as 22 ft near the entrance.</p><br>
<p>To the right of the entrance passage there is a rectangular room built into the wall.</p><br>
<p>It is about 10 by that can be entered from the passage by a low square opening. A broad bench-like seat is opposite this opening in the passage. To the left of the passage is another, similar room, accessible from the fort through a low square opening, but not accessible from the passage.</p><br>
<p>The wall contains long, narrow passages on either side of the entrance, which would have been covered over.</p><br>
<p>They seem to have been inaccessible, so their purpose is not known. The interior of the wall slopes, forming steps, presumably to give access to a parapet.</p><br>
<p>Inside the fort Du Noyer found traces of several clocháns, or drystone huts whose layout was no longer clear. There were traces of a wall along the cliff to the west, which is about 90 ft above sea level. Two parallel walls ran from the fort up to the slopes of Mount Eagle, separating the lands round the Fahan settlement from the land to the east.</p><br>
<h2>Archaeology</h2><br>
<p>The date at which the Dunbeg fort was built is very uncertain, although its structure resembles other Western Stone Forts. It may have been built around the same time as Iron Age blockhouse forts in Scotland such as the Crosskirk Fort in Caithness and the Clickimin Fort, Ness of Burgi Fort and Huxter Fort in Shetland.</p><br>
<p>A sample of wood found in a ditch lying partly under the stone wall was dated to around 580 BC, so the wall is no older than that. Another piece of wood in a deposit overlaying the base of a retaining wall was dated to around 800 AD, indicating that the wall was built before that date.</p><br>
<p>There is no trace of occupation other than the drystone clochán within the fort, which was built in the 10th century AD.</p><br>
<p>Zeta Psi Fraternity House is a historic fraternity house located at Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. The house was built by the Tau Chapter, Zeta Psi fraternity associated with Lafayette College. It was built in 1909-1910, and is a 2 1/2 story, nine bay wide, rock-faced granite building with a dormered hipped roof. It features a heavy eave cornice, prominent chimney stacks, and projecting facade pavilions. The interior reflects both Colonial Revival and Arts and Crafts influenced in its design and detailing.</p><br>
<p>It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.</p><br>
<p>The Tau Chapter is currently suspended by Lafayette College for a period of five years, but will become officially recognized by the campus again in the Fall of 2018.</p><br>
<p>Historic Monuments of Novgorod and Surroundings is a composite World Heritage Site which includes a number of medieval monuments in and around Veliky Novgorod, Russia. The site was inscribed in 1992.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Novgorod between the 9th and the 15th centuries was one of the most significant cities of medieval Rus. It lay on the trade route from the Varangians to the Greeks and was the center of the Novgorod Republic, which included the major part of what is currently northwestern Russia. From the 12th century, it was an example of a medieval republic, in which decisions were taken by veche – a meeting of the city population – and the prince was elected. (The only other Russian city with a similar organization was Pskov.) Novgorod was one of few areas of Rus not affected by the Mongol invasions, and therefore, in particular, active ecclesiastical construction was continuing in Novgorod in the 14th century, while it was stale in the rest of Rus. Novgorod was as well the seat of archbishop and an important cultural center. The earliest known Russian manuscripts were produced in Novgorod in the 11th century. Russian whitestone architecture and Russian painting originated from Novgorod and Pskov. One of the most important Russian medieval painters, Theophanes the Greek, was active in Novgorod.</p><br>
<h2>Composition</h2><br>

<p>Nazareth Hall Tract is a historic Moravian school complex located at Nazareth, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. It consists of the manor house Nazareth Hall, the 1840 Moravian Church, the "First Room" Building , the Principals House, the Single Sisters House, and a monument. In 1759, it became the central boarding school for sons of Moravian parents known as Nazareth Hall. The school closed in 1928-1929.</p><br>
<p>Nazareth Hall is a colonial mansion built in 1756, and is a solid masonry building with a gambrel roof measuring 100 feet long and 46 feet deep. The 1840 Moravian Church is a 2 1/2 story stucco coated stone building with a gable roof. The Parsonage was built in the 1870s and is a three story brick structure. The original section of the "First Room" Building was built in 1850, with additions and modifications made in 1855, 1875, and the 1920s. The Principals House is a two story building built in 1819, with additions and modifications made in the 1870s and in 1910. The Single Sisters House was built in 1784, and is a three story building with a single pitched roof. It was converted for school use in 1874-1875.</p><br>
<p>It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.</p><br>
<p>Chain Bridge or Change Bridge, also known as the Lehigh Canal Swinging Bridge and as Wire Towing Path at Pool No. 8, is a historic change bridge spanning the Lehigh River at Palmer Township and Williams Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. It was built in 1856-1857, and consists of three stone piers and two spans. Each pier is approximately 30 feet high. In 1972, the bridge consisted of the piers and the cable.</p><br>
<p>It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. The NRHP listing included a 5 acre area. It is included within a large historic district, Lehigh Canal: Eastern Section Glendon and Abbott Street Industrial Sites, which has numerous other structures and buildings, and which was listed on the NRHP in 1979.</p><br>
<p>Mount Kahuzi is an extinct volcano in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.</p><br>
<p>It is within the Biega - Kahuzi National Park, a World Heritage Site.</p><br>
<h2>Location</h2><br>
<p>Mount Kahuzi was last active at the end of the Pleistocene.</p><br>
<p>At 3,317 m it is the highest peak in the Mitumba Range, which runs along the west shore of Lake Kivu in the Albertine Rift.</p><br>
<p>The eastern part of the Biega - Kahuzi National Park, a World Heritage Site, lies on the slopes of the mountain.</p><br>
<p>The Zoological and Forest Reserve of Mount Kahuzi was created by decree on 27 July 1937, and extended in 1951 to include the Biega forest. It was gazetted as a national park in 1970.</p><br>
<h2>Flora</h2><br>
<p>Vegetation includes wet lowland rain forest, transitional rainforest and Afromontaine vegetation that is dominated by tree heathers.</p><br>
<p>Hedythrsus thamnoideus and Disa erubescens grow on one summit of Mount Kahuzi.</p><br>
<p>On its main summit, between 3,200 m and 3,308 m Erica spp. grows, as well as Senecio kahuzicus, Helichrysum mildbraedii, Huperzia saururus and Deschampsia flexuosa.</p><br>
<h2>Fauna</h2><br>
<p>Gorillas are found in the region, including the mountain slopes.</p><br>
<p>In 1993 the population around Mount Kahuzi was estimated to be about 275 individuals.</p><br>
<p>Their population was devastated during the Second Congo War of the late 1990s.</p><br>
<p>The extremely rare Mount Kahuzi Climbing Mouse has been found on its slopes.</p><br>
<p>Only two specimens have been found, both in the same location in the highly threatened montane forest on Mount Kahuzi at an elevation of around 2,000 m.</p><br>
<p>The River Orchy  is a river that passes through the village of Dalmally, Argyll in the West Highlands of Scotland. It rises in the Black Mount Forest, and flows southerly, passing through Loch Tulla and Glen Orchy before reaching Loch Awe. The hills of Beinn Mhic-Mhonaidh, Beinn Udlaidh and Beinn Bhreac-liath are to the north and south; there are falls and islands within the river. Reachable by the A82 road, tourists partake in kayaking, whitewater rafting, and fishing. Recent gold mining exploration has occurred in one of the river&#39;s glens just outside the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>The Orchy rises in the Black Mount Forest where its waters within the Deer Forest include the Island Pool and the Elbow Pool. After a run of 10 mi, in which it receives the waters of several large burns, it expands into Loch Tulla. Between Loch Tulla and Loch Awe, the river runs for 18 mi. It passes through Glen Orchy in a narrow channel. At Dalmally Vale, the river spreads into wide shallows, accumulating on banks. At the point of a shingle island, the Orchy flows through a cultivated strath, about 1/2 mi wide. The river merges with the waters of Loch Awe at Kilchurn Castle.</p><br>
<p>Above the Bridge of Orchy, the river water is shallow and stony. In the 5 mi of the river before its falls, there are many angling streams and pools. At Bridge of Orchy, the river is accessible via the A82.</p><br>
<p>The river&#39;s course changed in the mid 19th century. Prior to that, the river banks were protected, and the Orchy ran through Dalmally Vale through a narrow channel. As of 1884, the fields on the northern river bank extended farther south; and shingle island was a narrow strip of gravel with a small stream. When the banks were no longer protected, a large curve was cut away into an island, causing the river to extend farther and farther into the banks. Around 1900, a rough breakwater was built, diverting the current, and slowing the wear on the banks. The diverted current swept the gravel to either side of the island and into the bay to the south, causing it to fill with gravel.</p><br>
<p>The falls of the Orchy are about 7 mi from Dalmally, and are about 20 ft in height, forming almost a sheer drop.</p><br>
<p>There are islands within the river including a large wooded one about 1 mi above Inverlochy Castle; another one, Eilean a Phortaire, just below Dalmally Bridge, which is also wooded; and immediately below the latter lies a shingle island. The shingle island was separated from the fields by the 6 ft drop of the bank.</p><br>
<h2>Fauna</h2><br>
<p>Wildlife includes salmon and trout, as well as otter, golden eagle, short-eared owl.</p><br>
<h2>Tourism</h2><br>
<p>The rivers falls and rapids, Grades 3–5, are enjoyed by kayakers and rafting enthusiasts. Whitewater rafting season is October through March. Fishermen can fish for trout, while salmon fishing season runs from February through October. The Dalmally Beats 1, 2 and 3 offer 6 mi of double-bank fishing from the Bridge Pool in Dalmally to Sams Box Pool in Glen Orchy. There is vehicle access to most of the pools on both banks. The Upper Craig Beat, an area of approximately 2 mi between Little Colonels pool and the Boat pool allows fishing from both banks. Hill walkers climb up to Beinn Dorain, an ascent of 1,076 m, 6 mi away.</p><br>
<h2>Gold prospect</h2><br>
<p>Gold mining used to take place at the Cononish mine, near Tyndrum, Scotgold obatained planning permission for development of the mine for gold and silver extraction in early 2012. In 2010, gold mining exploration began in a River Orchy glen, approximately 5 km outside the Lomond National Park. The river is reported to cross several quartz sulphide veins with significant gold mineralisation. Environmental concerns about possible gold mining were raised due to the area&#39;s proximity to both the national park and Beinn Udlaidh, a popular climbing marilyn.</p><br>
<p>Easton Historic District is a national historic district located at Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. The district includes 405 contributing buildings in the central business district and surrounding residential areas of Easton. The buildings were primarily built between 1830 and 1910, with the oldest dated to 1752. Notable buildings include the First Reformed Church , Colonel Robert Hooper House, former Ormsbys Restaurant, First Public Library, St. Johns Lutheran Church, Wolf School, Kares Building, Jacob Riegel House, Benjamin Reigel House, Detwiler House, Northampton National Bank Building, Alpha Building, Jacob Mayer Building, and Bell Telephone Building. Located in the district are the separately listed are the Easton House, Parsons-Taylor House, Jacob Nicholas House, Jacob Mixsell House, Herman Simon House, and the State Theatre.</p><br>
<p>It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.</p><br>
<p>The Old King&#39;s Head Hotel is a hotel and public house at 48–50 Lower Bridge Street, on the corner of Castle Street, Chester, Cheshire, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The building was constructed in about 1208. It initially contained a section of the Chester Rows, but these were enclosed during the alterations made between the 15th and early 17th centuries. The latest of these alterations were made for Randle Holme I. The building was restored in 1935, and again during the 1960s.</p><br>
<h2>Architecture</h2><br>
<p>It is basically a timber-framed building, part of which has been refaced with yellow sandstone, and with brick that has been painted or rendered. The roofs are slated. The building is in three storeys, of which the upper storey facing Lower Bridge Street is jettied. Both faces have three bays. The three bays on Lower Bridge Street are gabled, as is the middle bay on Castle Street.</p><br>
<p>First Christian Church is a historic church at 612 Throckmorton Street in Fort Worth, Texas. It was founded in 1855, making it the oldest continuously operating church established in Fort Worth, Texas. The present building at 6th and Throckmorton dates back to 1915. It was designed by architects E.W. Van Slyke and Clyde Woodruff in a Renaissance Revival style. The raised two-story limestone building has a Greek Cross plan with a tower and copper-clad dome at the crossing and three porticos with Corinthian columns. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 and received the Fort Worth Historical and Cultural Landmarks Designation in 2006.</p><br>

<p>1855: First Christian was organized in the home of Dr. and Mrs. Carroll Peak on the 2nd Sunday in June. The first pastor was Mr. A.M. Dean. and the second pastor was Dr. B.F. Hall, DDS.</p><br>

<p>1865-70: Rev. J.A. Clark founded Add-Run College in the FCC building, naming it for the son of Addison Clark, who had been named after Addison and Randolf. Randolf suggested naming the school after the child. It was the first Public school, Col. John Peter Smith was the first teacher.</p><br>

<p>Julice Mound is an archaeological site in East Carroll Parish, Louisiana with a Plaquemine culture component dating to 1200–1541 CE and located less than one mile from Transylvania Mounds.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The site is located less than a mile from Transylvania Mounds and it is extremely likely that Julice is part of that complex. The site has a single platform mound and is located near a channel that feeds into the Mississippi River and right next to Louisiana Highway 581. A survey from 1954 describes it as being 8 ft in height and having a small platform on its summit. The route for HWY 581 runs over the former location of a large section of the mound, of which only about one third remains and recent measurements of the mound put it at 9 ft in height and 130 ft by 65 ft at its base. Pottery discovered at the site date its occupation to 1200–1541 CE.</p><br>
<p>Bayou Grande Cheniere Mounds  is an archaeological site in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana built by the Coastal Coles Creek culture. It was inhabited from 875 to 1200 CE, from the Early Coles Creek period to the Coles Creek/Plaquemine period.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The site is located on a natural levee of Bayou Grande Cheniere and has twelve mounds, eleven arranged around a central plaza and one 75 m to the south connected by a constructed landform. The site was connected by a causeway to Bayou Grande Cheniere. The elliptical plaza measures 100 ft on its north-south axis by 75 ft east-west. Mound 1, the largest, is a conical mound measuring 60 ft and located on the eastern edge of the plaza. The southern edge of the plaza is bounded by Mound 10 and the northern edge by Mound 3, both are platform mounds. The western edge of the plaza is a string of interconnected small mounds, Mounds 4 to 9. The site is unusual in its size and number of mounds. Typically Coastal Coles Creek settlements had three mounds arranged around a plaza. The site&#39;s plan and large scale are most like the large Coles Creek settlement in Avoyelles Parish, the Greenhouse Site.</p><br>
<h2>Excavations</h2><br>
<p>Henry Collins excavated the site in 1926. The mound site as mapped by McGimsey in 2000. Saunders, Timothy Schilling and seven students from Louisiana State University conducted field excavations at the site in January 2003. Pottery found during excavations was dated from 875 to 1200 CE during the Bayou Ramos (700-875 CE), Bayou Cutler (875-1000 CE) and St. Gabriel (1000-1200 CE) Phases, spanning the Early Coles Creek period to the Transitional Coles Creek/Plaquemine period for the eastern delta. No material from earlier the Troyville culture were found, nor were materials from after the Plaquemine period. In the late 2000s NASAs Stennis Space Center, in partnership with the US Army Corps of Engineers New Orleans District and Tulane University, undertook an archaeological survey of the southeastern Louisiana marshes including the Bayou Grande Cheniere site. This survey discovered the existence of the causeway leading from the site to the bayou.</p><br>
<p>Wynnum Wading Pool is a heritage-listed tidal pool on the foreshore of Moreton Bay at The Esplanade, Wynnum, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. The shallow oval-shaped pool was built in 1932 by relief workers during the Great Depression and opened to the public in 1933.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The Wynnum Wading Pool Reserve was constructed in 1932 by relief workers and is a shallow tidal pool with concrete walls and a sandy bottom.</p><br>
<h3>Background</h3><br>
<p>The first European settlement of the Wynnum-Manly area of Moreton Bay occurred in the 1860s when two sugar mills, Lota and Wyvernleigh were established. The area soon became popular with holiday makers, and holiday homes were constructed along the bay. In 1882 land sales of the Manly Beach Estate (named after the coastal Sydney suburb) were held, giving the area its present name. The completion of the Cleveland railway line in 1889 provided further impetus for the development of the area as a seaside resort, although the area maintained its connections with the fishing industry. By the late 1920s, access to the area was possible by rail, bus or road, further increasing its popularity as a resort and also as a permanent place of residence for Brisbane businessmen and their families.</p><br>
<p>Prior to the construction of the wading pool, swimming had taken place in the sea or in the swimming pools which were attached to the various public jetties. The still waters of Moreton Bay were preferred over the exposed beaches with large waves. The fear of shark attacks and being stung by jellyfish remained even in the waters of the bay. Enclosures for safe swimming existed along the Brisbane River and at Sandgate.</p><br>
<p>In 1922, Alderman J. Patterson presented a scheme that included the building of a bund wall at low water mark using dredgings from Wynnum Creek to reclaim land for use as recreational purposes, including a pool.</p><br>
<p>During the Great Depression, the Government of Queensland established the Bureau of Industry to fund public works and provide unemployment relief. The Queensland Government paid the wages of workers and the council provided the materials. Those on "The Susso" were assigned work based on their family circumstances. A man with a wife and one child would work a three-day week and receive 27/- a week. The Wynnum Wading Pool Reserve was constructed by the Brisbane City Council, as part of the Unemployment Relief System. The Council took advantage of this scheme to complete a number of projects in the Wynnum Manly area, including the Manly Retaining Wall.</p><br>
<h3>Construction</h3><br>
<p>The pool is around 128 m by 54 m with automatic valves to maintain the maximum water depth from the tide at 75 cm. It has a sandy bottom, five shallow steps on three sides, a concrete ramp and a slippery slide. Hundreds of people attended the official opening on 21 January 1933 and witnessed the sailing event of 10 footers arranged for the occasion. The installation of floodlights allowed bathing on hot nights. Installation of flood lighting also occurred before the summer season of 1933, presumably to allow for night time use.</p><br>
<p>It seems that few alterations have been made to the pool since its original construction, although alterations have recently been carried out on the surrounding area to provide change rooms and a barbecue area, as well as a white sandy beach. The pool has been popular with both locals and visitors since its inception in 1932. It remains in use for most of the year, by swimmers in the summer months and by model boat enthusiasts during winter.</p><br>
<p>On 13 July 2008, the wading pool was re-opened by Brisbane Lord Mayor Campbell Newman after a A$6.5 million upgrade.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The Wynnum Wading Pool Reserve is located in a recreational reserve on the foreshore of Moreton Bay. The Manly jetty extends into the bay to the north of the pool and barbecue areas are located at either end of the pool. The area at the northern end has been refurbished to include showers, change rooms, toilets, a play area and a man-made white sandy beach known as "Pandanus Beach". Trees are planted along the foreshore and at either end of the pool and include pines, bauhinia and figs. A memorial to Walter Barnes, MLA for Bulimba and Wynnum, in the form of a sandstone drinking fountain is also located at the northern end of the pool.</p><br>
<p>The pool is a large oval shape measuring 128 metres x 54 metres, with a depth at the centre of approximately 750mm. Separated from the bay by a narrow concrete path, it is constructed of concrete with a natural compacted clay base which is covered with fresh sand fortnightly. It has five shallow steps surrounding the edges on all sides except that closest to the road. A concrete ramp provides additional access at the south-western corner of the pool and a slippery slide is located in the northern end of the pool. Two depth indicators are located at either end of the pool.</p><br>
<p>The pool contains salt water which enters the pool through three concrete pipes at high tide when flood gates retain the water. The pipes have mesh across them to prevent sea life entering the pool.</p><br>
<p>Vegetation in the surrounding park area includes pine, bauhinia and fig trees.</p><br>

<p>Wynnum Wading Pool Reserve was listed on the Queensland Heritage Register on 5 October 1998 having satisfied the following criteria.</p><br>

<p>Mayes Cottage is a heritage-listed house and now museum at 36 Mawarra Street, Kingston, City of Logan, Queensland, Australia. It was built in 1877. It was also known as Pleasant Place. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Mayes Cottage is a small one storeyed timber dwelling on a large property containing several outbuildings. It was constructed as the family home of local pioneer, John Mayes in 1887, replacing an earlier house, reused as a store.</p><br>
<p>John and Emily Mayes and their two small children, Joshua and Ruth, arrived in Brisbane from England aboard the SS Indus in 1871. They had another 5 children. The first two children both didnt survive. Ruth was only 12 years old and drowned in the well. Joshua contracted typhoid fever in his 21st year of life. In June 1873 John took up 321 acre of land in the Kingston area, then known as Scrubby Creek. When they arrived at what was to become Kingston, the Mayes family lived in a tent on the property, but in 1872 a small timber slab hut was constructed. The Mayes lease was subject to conditions requiring improvements under the provisions of the Crown Lands Alienation Act (1868). Another local pioneering family, the Kingstons, settled in the district in 1872, under the same leasing requirements.</p><br>
<p>By 1877, when a property inspection was undertaken to ascertain whether the Mayes family were honouring their lease requirements, improvements to the property were reported. These included the erection of the 1872 hut, described as a two roomed house with bark roof, along with outbuildings including a kitchen slab with bark roof, and a water hole. A well was built near an already established water-hole popular with the local aboriginal community on the Kingston Road border of the house, providing water for the house prior to the construction of tanks. One of the daughters of John and Emily, Ruth, was drowned in the well. Extensive fencing and clearing of the land was evident in the 1877 inspection, orange trees were planted and cattle had been introduced. The original entrance to the property was via a sliprail on the Kingston Rd fence.</p><br>
<p>The Mayes family were supported principally by timber getting on the property, providing timber for the pit props in the Ipswich mines, firewood, sleepers, fence posts and other undressed timber products. In 1886-7 the Mayes constructed a new timber house "Pleasant Place" adjacent to the earlier hut, which they also retained for storage (later it became the garage for the family car). Early photographs of Pleasant Place show a single storeyed timber building with exposed external framing, a pyramidal roof and extensive verandahs. Originally, as well as an outdoor oven to the west of the kitchen, an open fire and brick chimney were placed at the southern end of the kitchen providing limited heating facilities. This was removed from the kitchen and replaced by a window in the 1930s.</p><br>
<p>John Mayes applied to purchase the property on January 30, 1883, and a Deed of Grant was issued on July 7 of that year. The following year an application was made by Mayes for a refund for land that had been resumed by the railway, which was due to open in 1885, reducing his property to 313 acres and 38 perches.</p><br>
<p>During the 1880s and 90s, the family grew a wide variety of fruit trees around the house, including mangoes, pineapples, citrus fruit, guavas and persimmons. About 20 head of cattle were introduced to the property during the 1890s. By about 1906 a milking yard was installed when J. Mayes, either the elderly John or his son Josiah, bought shares in the newly formed Kingston Cooperative Dairy Company.</p><br>
<p>When John Mayes died on June 10, 1908, Emily remarried Johns brother, Richard, with whom she moved to Mooloolah in 1913. Josiah and his wife, Daisy, moved to Pleasant Place in 1913, and the transfer of property to Josiahs name was completed in 1918. Cream from the dairy cattle at Pleasant Place was taken to the Dairy Co-op to be sold, though the property was not really fertile enough to support dairy cows, and timber getting and fruit growing continued as the main sources of income. Josiah was a registered bee-keeper and 120 hives were introduced to the northern slope of the property.</p><br>
<p>By 1912 the Kingston area was beginning to develop, with closer settlement and the opening of a local school and, later the Kingston Hall, used for dances and community meetings.</p><br>
<p>In 1922, a dairy was constructed at Pleasant Place, and the original slab house, whose shingle roof was re-used for the new dairy, was itself re-roofed with galvanised iron, in accordance with the Dairy Produce Act of Queensland (1904), pertaining to dairy storage sheds. Milking was conducted in the milking yards, under a fig tree planted for shading the area.</p><br>
<p>During the 1930s and 40s, several alterations to various outbuildings were made, including the extension of the feed shed, the construction of a storage shed near the milking yard, the removal of an outdoor oven from the kitchen yard and the widening and enclosure of the walkway between the kitchen and the house. Electricity was connected to the house in 1937, and a Chevrolet was purchased in about 1935, thereby allowing the removal of the buggy shelter which was replaced by a laundry. Other changes to the property in the early 1940s included the planting of a row of oleanders by Josiahs son, Richard for his wife and the construction of a bush house by Josiahs daughter, Evelyn.</p><br>
<p>The Mayes family discontinued dairying in 1945, and turned the dairy into a storage area for a honey extractor. By the mid 1950s, when Josiah was not able to maintain or work the farm, the family sold off land for suburban development, leaving only ten acres around the house.</p><br>
<p>In 1974 the Queensland Housing Commission resumed most of the family property and after Daisy and Josiah’s deaths the Commission sought to acquire the house too. A local action group lobbied to save the historic property, which was listed by the National Trust of Australia and gazetted as a reserve for Park and Recreation in June 1979. The house is now surrounded by 2 acres of land.</p><br>
<p>The property is now leased from the Logan City Council by the National Trust of Queensland, who in turn operate it as a museum.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>Mayes Cottage is a small one-storeyed timber building on a large block on Mawarra St, Kingston, which features a variety of outbuildings and established vegetation. The cottage is situated on the highest point of the block, with land gently sloping away to the north and east, providing the house with panoramic views of the surrounding area.</p><br>
<p>Mayes Cottage is a timber building, raised on sawn timber stumps and encircled by a verandah on three sides. The house and kitchen block have discrete roofs of corrugated galvanised iron, a high pitched pyramidal section over the house with a simple curved verandah awning; and a gabled roof over the kitchen wing. These parts are linked with an enclosed walkway, roofed with curved corrugated iron. The single skinned external walls of the main house have exposed diagonally braced timber framing, and are lined with horizontal boards. The verandah awning is supported on stop chamfered square timber columns, with square sectioned timber balustrade handrail and midrail.</p><br>
<p>A centrally located entrance door on the eastern facade, is accessed via a small open tread timber stair onto the verandah. The entrance is flanked by two timber framed window openings, housing sash windows of six panes with fine mullions and simple framing.</p><br>
<p>Internally, Mayes Cottage consists of four major rooms with additional rooms added to the verandah space of the western side of the building. Timber boarding is used throughout the cottage for flooring and internal partitioning, with beaded boards used to line the ceiling. Throughout the cottage there are simple moulded four panelled timber doors. The walkway joining the main house to the kitchen wing is enclosed with casement windows, glazed with coloured and clear arctic glass.</p><br>
<p>The kitchen wing is a simple rectangular building, clad with horizontal timber boards. Curved corrugated iron window awnings protect the windows, and a corrugated iron oven recess is attached to the northern end of the kitchen. This section is internally lined with v-jointed boards, raked at the junction between ceiling and wall.</p><br>
<p>The property houses several outbuildings and a substantial number of established trees and other vegetation. To the north of the house is a simple fully enclosed building, with a shingled roof, timber door and small unglazed window opening covered with a boarded timber shutter. To the west of this are the remains of the original home, consisting of framing elements and roofing. This structure is separated into two halves with a wall of timber slab construction. The northern half of the building has a raised platform, and a gabled roof covering, whilst the southern section has an adjoining skillion roof and an earth floor.</p><br>
<p>To the west of this are the milking yards, comprising a milking shed and remnants of a simple timber post and rail fence. The shed has an L-shaped plan, enclosed on the western end with the extending wing open to the north and framed with wide timber rough cut sections.</p><br>
<p>Several large mango trees, both on the property and adjacent to the north-eastern border, feature as early remnants.</p><br>

It was designed by John James Clark and built by William Peter Clark. It is also known as Yungaba Immigration Depot, Immigration Barracks, and No.6 Australian General Hospital. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992.</p><br>
<p>In 2009 as part of the Q150 celebrations, the Yungaba Immigration Centre was announced as one of the Q150 Icons of Queensland for its role as a "state shaper".</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Yungaba is a two-storey brick institutional building designed as an immigrant depot in 1885 by John James Clark, the Queensland Colonial Architect. Following his dismissal shortly after, the plan was developed by Edward Henry Alder and Robert Henry Mills. Constructed by William Peter Clark, the building is described as being of Italianate/Queensland/Institutional style.</p><br>
<p>Following the subdivision of Kangaroo Point in 1843-44, lots 21 and 22 were purchased by Judah and Isaac Solomon and Thomas Adams. Some time later John "Tinker" Campbell, a neighbouring land-owner, purchased a share in both lots and transferred his boiling-down works to that location to gain the benefit of the small stream which crossed the properties. Following a series of financial transactions, the land was eventually purchased by Robert Douglas in 1853 for &pound;400. Douglas constructed a house on lot 21 which he named "The Willows". Douglas was a prominent and popular person in Brisbane society at that time although some scandal arose when it was revealed that he had sold his Kangaroo Point property to the government for &pound;14,000 in 1884.</p><br>
<p>The government had been aware for some time that the immigration facilities at William Street were inadequate for their needs. The decision to acquire the land at Kangaroo Point was justified by the need to provide "pleasant surroundings" for those who were recently arrived in the colony. The pattern of immigration fluctuated wildly over the years and the period immediately preceding the construction of the Kangaroo Point depot, immigration had been at an all-time high. William Peter Clark, the successful tenderer for the work, ran into a series of difficulties with the construction which resulted in almost a year&#39;s delay in the completion. The interior layout was designed by William Hodgen and arranged in a manner typical of institutional buildings of the time. Married quarters were in the form of separate cubicles on the ground level, and single quarters (segregated by gender, and in dormitory form) on the upper level. Symmetrical pairs of laundry and privy facilities were ranged to the rear of the building.</p><br>
<p>The first residents were passengers on the migrant ship Duke of Buccleuch who landed on 6 December 1887.</p><br>
<p>The first administrator was William Edward Parry-Okeden. Parry-Okeden was already a highly competent and practical man with a reputation for fair-dealing and vigorous commitment to his occupation. He and his family moved to Brisbane from Blackall to take up his appointment at the Immigration Depot. Later in life he was to be appointed Under Colonial Secretary and to play an active role in both the management of Aborigines, the organisation of the Native Police and the resolution of the shearers&#39; strikes in 1891 and 1894. Following the floods of 1887, Parry-Okeden and his wife refurbished "The Willows" which continued as their residence during his four years as immigration agent.</p><br>
<p>From the outset Parry Okeden saw that a number of critical issues needed to be addressed before the depot could operate efficiently. Problems dogged the project throughout its early years. From the start, difficulties were experienced due to poor drainage resulting from the re-direction of the natural drainage into a stormwater drain. Subsequent drainage works had varying degrees of success but the building soon showed signs of rising damp which was exacerbated by the poor quality bricks used during construction. Gas and water connections were either very basic or completely absent from vital parts of the building, there was no wharf facility at which to disembark the immigrants and, once landed, there was no facility for isolating those suspected of suffering contagious disease.</p><br>
<p>For a long time it was argued that the damp problem was a result of rain beating on the sides of the building, rather than due to poor site drainage. In 1891 the verandahs on the eastern end of the northern side of the building were extended to shelter the walls from the rain. A matching verandah extension at the western end was not constructed until 1899 as the expense was considered too great when the source of the damp had not been proven. The later extension was made to regain the symmetry of the facade, rather than as a means of protecting the walls from the rain.</p><br>
<p>Wharf facilities were provided at the river bank in 1887 with a large luggage shed on the river bank. Parry-Okeden pointed out that the design was less than practical since a wide gap had been left between the two structures. At high tide the wharf was cut off from land by a twelve-foot expanse of water. At low water the wharf was inaccessible from the river due to the shallow water at this point. Repeated requests were necessary before the problems were rectified.</p><br>
<p>An outbreak of scarlet fever in 1889 lent urgency to the already noted need for isolation wards in which to treat sick immigrants. The same year a facility was constructed, but, due to an oversight in the plans, it had no facilities for the provision of gas or water or for the disposal of waste and storm water. Similar problems dogged the long-awaited "disinfecting plant" which was first vandalised and later inundated due to faulty drainage.</p><br>
<p>When immigration levels were low, the building was used for a variety of purposes. In 1900 it served as temporary accommodation for the inmates of the Dunwich Asylum which had been appropriated as an isolation ward for plague victims. In 1904-1906 it was again appropriated as accommodation for South Sea Islanders being repatriated under the new Commonwealth laws. The arrival of an immigrant ship led to the re-location of the Islanders to rented accommodation nearby as it was considered inappropriate to expect the "two races" to co-habit.</p><br>
<p>The outbreak of World War I led to another change in use, the building being requisitioned for use as a military hospital. Few alterations to the fabric occurred as a consequence, although two single-storey wards were constructed to the southeast of the building. At the end of the war, the building provided an ideal reception area for returning servicemen who, with their wives, were feted at public receptions. Most of the building activity associated with this phase was removed at the end of the war.From the end of World War I and throughout the 1920s, immigration swelled. The Great Depression of the 1930s led to a rapid fall in numbers, exacerbated by the cancellation of the assisted passage schemes. In 1938 the assistance scheme was reinstated and numbers rapidly climbed, only to fall again with the commencement of World War II.</p><br>
<p>During the period of inactivity in the 1930s, the building was used to house the team working on the construction of the Story Bridge. Accommodation for the superintendent of works, John Bradfield, was provided in the eastern room on the ground floor of the north wing. The entire upper floor of the north wing was devoted to offices and drafting rooms for the works in progress. Four dormer windows were inserted into the roof of the North wing dormitory to provide additional light for the draftsmen. The team for the concurrent Stanley River Dam project were relegated to a large room on the lower floor</p><br>
<p>The bridge construction was undertaken by Evans Deakin, who converted the immigration depot&#39;s grounds into an industrial site with workshops and storehouses. A row of three open sheds cut off the connection between the hostel and the river, remaining in place until some time after the works were completed. The bridge is carried on tall stone pylons across the site to the rear of the principal building. The danger from falling debris and intentionally thrown objects has resulted in the need to identify an easement across the property on which no buildings can be constructed.</p><br>
<p>With the commencement of WWII the hostel was used to accommodated a hundred women and children evacuated from Hong Kong in 1940. In 1941 the depot was once again converted into a hospital, treating general patients. In 1942 it was devoted to "special" cases - those soldiers suffering the effects of venereal diseases. The buildings along the river frontage continued to be occupied by Evans Deakin; however most of the other structures on the site were used for the treatment of patients. Most of these buildings are now demolished.</p><br>
<p>The post-war immigration boom led to a renewed life for the building which was now named Yungaba State Immigration Office and Reception Centre. The name "Yungaba" derives from the Gubbi Gubbi Aboriginal language from the Maroochy area and means "place of sunshine". The volume of post-war immigration was such that the hostel was unable to cope with more than a small proportion of new arrivals, and the bulk were re-directed to the many empty military camps around the city. Of these, Camp Columbia at Wacol was perhaps the best known.</p><br>
<p>This period saw what were probably the most extensive alterations to the building that have occurred to date. Cubicles were provided in the downstairs dormitories, toilet facilities were re-modelled or re-built, the kitchen was enlarged and refurbished and the exterior brickwork was limewashed. In the period since, the building has been subjected to various minor intrusions and alterations, with the removal of the verandahs and their reconstruction in 1990 being a major impact on the original fabric. Poor management and an inadequate maintenance program have contributed to loss of fabric, and the various internal subdivisions have had a negative impact on the effectiveness of the internal ventilation designed into the building by William Hodgen. In 1993 the building was refitted to provide office accommodation for the Department of Family Services. This refit involved the demolition of the partitions in the North wing. The access to the river was regained following the demolition of the sheds occupied by Evans Deakin and the new accommodation facilities erected in the 1970s respected this important axis.</p><br>
<p>In 1988 Yungaba became the first building to entered on the Queensland Estate Register maintained under the Cultural Record (Landscapes Queensland and Queensland Estate) Act 1987. The entry was a result of community concern over the impact of the re-development of Kangaroo Point and the need to conserve significant elements of the community&#39;s heritage.</p><br>
<p>The use of Yungaba for immigration was phased out from 1993 and had ceased by 1995.</p><br>
<p>In 2008, the Queensland Government sold Yungaba to developers. The developers, Australand, have restored the fabric of the building and then converted it into ten apartments, constructed another 140 apartments in three adjacent apartment buildings, and building a multicultural centre and 224 seat auditorium. The new developments do not block the views from Yungaba to the river.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>Yungaba is located at Main Street, Kangaroo Point, Brisbane. Sited on the banks of the Brisbane River, adjacent to the Storey Bridge the property holds a prominent position on Petrie Bight/Shafston Reach. The principal approach to the site is directed towards the river frontage however the common access to the site is from Main Street. This point of landward entry passes through the rear of the site and reveals a collection of ancillary buildings associated with different uses the site has had through its history.</p><br>
<p>Yungaba is constructed as a symmetrical cruciform plan dominated by a substantial central entrance loggia which is flanked by two three-storey towers. These elements define the entry core of the building and the commencement of the two wings which extend to the north and south of the core. The building is a two-storey load-bearing brick structure with timber-framed floors and roof. The roof form consists of intersecting gable roof forms punctuated by the pyramidal roofs of the two three-storey towers. The roof is clad with corrugated metal sheeting and includes a series of ornate metal ridge ventilators.</p><br>
<p>Verandahs extend along the eastern and western elevations of the wings of the building. The verandahs have timber posts and handrails with decorative cast iron balustrade infill panels. The end sections of the verandahs are also enclosed with lattice screening. Beyond the line of the verandah, windows are sheltered under sunhoods constructed from cast iron wall brackets and timber hood framing, clad with metal sheeting.</p><br>
<p>Internally the central core retains its original configuration with rooms being used as personal offices and meeting rooms associated with Public Works. In both the north and south wings of the building the once open plan interior spaces have been adapted to accommodate offices and function areas associated with a catering company and a collection of community groups. At ground level these spaces have been divided into cellular rooms serviced by a central hall while the upper level remains substantially open with office partitioning being concentrated toward the core of the building. The timber framed partitioning to these areas is clad with both hardboard and timber tongue-and-groove linings. These adaptive works are generally reversible and much of the original fabric of the building remains intact.</p><br>
<p>The garden structure to the building appears to post date WWII. On the riverside of Yungaba a ring road sweeps past the entry to the building and out toward the river edge returning to the point of entry at the northern end of the building. A collection of mature and more recent plantings line the ring road with the central area being predominately grass. A more recent function room constructed of brick with a flat metal deck roof is located in the south east corner of the site, fronting the river.</p><br>
<p>A bitumen car park set amongst a collection of ancillary buildings covers much of the area to the rear of the building. These structures are single storey and constructed of both brickwork and timber with simple gable and hip roof forms. The roofs are clad with corrugated metal sheeting and some include timber louvred ridge ventilators.</p><br>
<p>A more recent accommodation facility is located across the access road to the north of Yungaba. This building is two storeys and constructed of brick with concrete floors and a flat metal deck roof. Essentially the building is visually detached from Yungaba due to its lower level siting and line of mature trees which create a barrier between to the two parts of the site.</p><br>

<p>Schroeder Mountain is a mountain in the California&#39;s Sierra Nevada, on the Tahoe National Forest. It is located 0.8 mi east of California State Route 49 in Sierra County. Its elevation is 6,942 ft.</p><br>
<p>It is 2.5 mi west-northwest of Yuba Pass, 1.5 mi southwest of Beartrap Meadow; approx. 30 mi northeast of Downieville. Clark Station Summer Home Tract is at the base of the mountain.</p><br>
<h2>Namesake history</h2><br>
<p>Schroeder Mountain is named for John Schroeder (1822–1906), a pioneer, miner, rancher, and teamster. After migrating from Indiana to California following the Gold Rush in 1852, Schroeder bought and sold land in Yuba and Siskiyou Counties, before settling in Sierra County in 1855. The following year he settled on a ranch located several miles west of Loyalton, and 16 mi east-northeast of this summit.</p><br>
<p>Schroeder was born August 18, 1822 in Rush County, Indiana, the sixth child of Peter and Nancy Schroeder. During the gold rush in 1852, John Schroeder came to California with his brother and nephew. In the 1852, Special State Census John lists his occupation as a miner. Family history claims John was a successful miner and professional gambler. According to the relatives remaining in Indiana, John was the black sheep of the family. It is not known exactly where his initial search for gold took him. Although it is known that he purchased/sold property in Yuba County in 1854 and Siskiyou County in 1855 before arriving in Sierra County. John was one of three pioneers who located quarter sections of land in 1859 at Smith Neck, which is now known as Loyalton.</p><br>
<p>On April 11, 1856, he married Wealthy Ann Katen in Yreka City, Siskiyou County and then moved to Marysville after their first child was born. From there, they went east over the Yuba Pass to Sierra Valley in Sierra County. Again, according to family history, Wealthy Ann made the journey riding a mule and carrying the baby in her arms. The family settled on a ranch several miles west of Loyalton, property later homesteaded by John. The rest of their ten children were born at this location.</p><br>
<p>In the 1860, 1870 and 1880 censuses, John listed himself as a farmer. In the Great Register of 1892, he describes himself as a teamster. His obituary describes him as a rancher and indicates that he was extensively engaged in raising stock in the Loyalton area. At one time, he ran a freight line from Marysville to Virginia City presumably what is now Highway 49. Throughout these activities, he continued to try his hand at mining.</p><br>
<p>John died in Loyalton on July 11, 1906, not quite 84 years old and is buried in the local cemetery. The cause of his death was asthenia with old age as a contributing factor. According to his obituary, "Mr. Schroeder was a typical westerner, a hardy pioneer and came of good stock."</p><br>
<p>Nazareth Historic District is a national historic district located at Nazareth, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. The district includes 503 contributing buildings and 1 contributing site  in a mostly residential area of Nazareth. Most of the buildings were built in the mid-19th to early-20th century, with a few dated to the 18th century. The buildings are primarily 2 1/2 stories tall and constructed of brick or frame. Most of the remaining stone buildings were built prior to 1858, when Nazareth came under civil control from the Moravian church. Notable non-residential buildings include the Nazareth Moravian Church , and St. Johns Lutheran Church . Located in the district is the separately listed Nazareth Hall Tract.</p><br>
<p>It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.</p><br>
<p>The Süllberg is a ridge, up to, in the Calenberg Land near Springe in Hanover Region in the German state of Lower Saxony.</p><br>
<h2>Location</h2><br>
<p>The Süllberg and its foothills, the Vörier Berg in the north, and the Wolfsberg in the northeast, lies a few kilometres east of the Deister in Germany&#39;s Central Uplands. It rises around 14 kilometres south-southwest of the city of Hanover on the territory of Springe and the municipality of Wennigsen, whose boundary runs over the triple-summit hill. A number of villages lie on the slopes of the ridge or at it feet. These are the Springe villages of Bennigsen to the south-southeast and Lüdersen to the east as well as the villages of Holtensen to the north-northwest and Bredenbeck to the west where the hills transition to the Deister. The Bundesstraße 217 federal road runs about one kilometre west of the Süllberg from north to south.</p><br>

<h2>Walking</h2><br>
<p>There are various hiking trails on the wooded Süllberg. One fork in the tracks between two of its peaks lies at an elevation of. Its actual summit is, however, not accessible on a footpath. There are good views from the edge of the woods and, on clear days, the highest hill in the Harz, the Brocken, can be made out to the southeast.</p><br>
<h2>Utilization by man</h2><br>
<p>In the 19th century sandstone was quarried in the Süllberg. Even today, numerous sandstone quarries bear witness to the former industry, especially on the western side. In the Second World War there was an anti-aircrate site on the top of the ridge; today a large number of bomb craters and the concrete foundations remain as evidence. In the north, towards Lüdersen, there is a Cold War bunker. This has now been given by the Federal Property Management Agency to a private investor who specialises in the area of archiving and document storage as a backup.</p><br>

<p>The Homer Wilson Ranch, also known as the Blue Creek Ranch, was one of the largest ranches in the early twentieth century in what would become Big Bend National Park in the USA state of Texas. The ranch was established by Homer Wilson in 1929 at Oak Springs to the west of the Chisos Mountains. Ultimately comprising 44 sections of land, amounting to more than 28,000 acre, the Oak Canyon-Blue Creek Ranch was acquired by the State of Texas in 1942 for incorporation into the new park. A large portion of the ranch comprised portions of the old G4 Ranch , established by John and Clarence Gano in the 1880s. Wilson&#39;s ranch focused on sheep and goats, the first such large operation in the Big Bend area. Wilson continued to live at the ranch until his death in 1943; his family moved from the ranch the next year. Wilson, born in Del Rio, Texas in 1892, had studied petroleum engineering at the Missouri School of Mines and was a World War I veteran. The ranch, with the headquarters at Oak Springs and its operational center at Blue Creek, was one of the largest in Texas, and the most significant ranch in Big Bend.</p><br>
<p>The Blue Creek residence measures about 24 ft by 60 ft with a 16 ft by 60 ft screened porch on the south side of the house. The single-story residence comprised two bedrooms, a living room and a kitchen, with a large central fireplace. The house features a double roof, the inner layer a traditional reed roof of the type locally used, with a sheet metal roof above. Another building housed ranch help. The structures were abandoned when the Wilsons moved out.</p><br>
<p>The Blue Creek area of the Wilson ranch was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on April 14, 1975.</p><br>
<p>Hot Springs, also known as Boquillas Hot Springs, is a former resort in what is now Big Bend National Park in Texas. They were developed by J.O. Langford from 1909. Langford was a Mississippi native who had contracted malaria as a child. Searching for a cure, he heard of reputedly curative hot springs on the Rio Grande while visiting Alpine, Texas. Langford made a homestead claim, sight unseen. Although other homestead claims on the site had failed, Langford, his wife Bessie and his 18-month-old daughter set out for the site, discovering that it was already occupied by Cleofas Natividad with his wife and ten children. Initially considering the Natividads squatters, the Langfords developed a cooperative relationship with the Natividads. J.O. took a 21-day treatment of drinking and bathing in the spring waters, regaining his health.</p><br>
<p>The site was the first major tourist attraction in the area, predating the establishment of the national park. Before the Langford&#39;s development, a small stone tub had been excavated in the local stone for bathing, with a dugout that was renovated by the Langfords as a residence. The Langfords later built an adobe house, a stone bathhouse, and brushwood bathing shelters. The Langfords left in 1912 when bandits made the area unsafe. When they returned in 1927 they rebuilt the bathhouse, but with a canvas roof. They also built a store and a motor court, consisting of seven attached cabins.</p><br>
<p>The structures were built of local stone with wood trussed roofs covered with corrugated metal. Interior walls were plastered. Four of the motor court rooms featured painted murals. A terrace was covered with a long porch or ramada connecting the cabins.</p><br>
<p>The historic district includes petrogylphs left by Native American visitors. The springs were visited by Pedro de Rábago y Terán in 1747, who found Apaches farming the area. In later years the Comanche Trail passed nearby. The hot springs remain, at a temperature of 105 degrees Fahrenheit, and may be used for soaking.</p><br>
<p>Hot Springs was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 17, 1974.</p><br>
<p>The Boot Inn is at 17 Eastgate Street and 9 Eastgate Row, Chester, Cheshire, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building. The building consists of a shop occupying a former undercroft at street level, above which is a public house at the level of the Row and above.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The Boot Inn was built in the early to middle part of the 17th century, opening as an inn in 1643. Its façade was rebuilt and restored in the late 19th century. For many years most of the front section of the building at Row level was occupied by a barber&#39;s shop, with a corridor leading to the public house beyond it. Since alterations and restorations were carried out in 1988 the whole of the Row level has been occupied by a public house.</p><br>
<h2>Architecture</h2><br>
<p>The building is constructed in sandstone, the upper storeys being timber-framed with plaster panels, and is roofed in slate. It is in three storeys, and has one bay. At ground level is a modern shop front. At the level of the Row a shaped balustrade. Behind this is a stallboard, the paved walkway of the Row, and the restored entrance front to the public house. The top storey is jettied and carried on brackets carved with figures. It contains a canted five-light mullioned and transomed oriel window above five shaped panels. At the sides of the window are close studded panels and pilasters. Above the window is a carved tie-beam, and a gable containing herringbone studding. The bargeboards are moulded with a drop finial.</p><br>

<p>The Mazique Archeological Site (22 AD 502), also known as White Apple Village, is a prehistoric Coles Creek culture archaeological site located in Adams County, Mississippi. It is also the location of the historic White Apple Village of the Natchez people and the Mazique Plantation. It was added to the NRHP on October 23, 1991, as NRIS number 91001529.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The site is located on the west bank of Second Creek, a tributary of the Homochitto River and consisted of three platform mounds and a central plaza. It was occupied during both the Coles Creek period (700–1000 CE) and the later Plaquemine Mississippian period (1000–1680 CE), when it was recorded in historic times as the White Apple village of the Natchez people. Mound A sites directly on the bank of Second Creek and more than half of its mass has been lost due to the creek eroding into it. It is currently 8 m in height but was recorded as being 6.1 m in height and 45.7 m in circumference by Montroville W. Dickeson in 1841 and 18 ft in height and 131 ft in length on the top by Calvin Brown in 1916. Mound B is located to the southeast and is 4 m in height and has a historic cemetery on its summit. It still retains its flat topped shape. Dickeson was the only one to mention the third mound, which he described as smaller than the others and being further reduced by cultivation of its surface. By the time of the other surveys and investigations it is no longer mentioned and its location is still under investigation. The site is named for a local African-American family from southern Adams County who once owned the land.</p><br>
<h2>Excavations</h2><br>
<p>Mazique was visited in 1927 and 1929 by James A. Ford and Moreau B. Chambers, who performed a site survey and surface collection of ceramic fragments. Analysis of these fragments were used to date the site to the Coles Creek period. The first archaeological excavations at the site were in 1940 by the Natchez Historical Association at the instigation of local tourism promoter and entrepreneur Jefferson Davis Dickson, Jr. Dickson then had a short-lived "archaeological museum" built on the site during the early 1940s, which caused serious damage. The site was again excavated in 1948 by John L. Cotter and W. P. Lancaster.</p><br>
<h2>White Apple Village</h2><br>
<p>White Apple Village had three different actual sites, which were each occupied at different times. The first was near Washington, Mississippi, the second in Franklin County, Mississippi, and the third at the present location of the Mazique mound site. This factional infighting was a holdover of pre-European local politics, when various groups vied for supremacy over the polity. This had caused the main Natchez political leadership to switch amongst various sites throughout the years, at times being located at Anna, Emerald, Foster, Mazique, and the Grand Village sites. The First Natchez War (1716) began when raiders from White Apple killed four French traders. After the war, the French built Fort Rosalie near the Grand Village, considered the beginning of Natchez, Mississippi. In 1722 and 1723, war (Second and Third Natchez Wars) again broke out when in White Apple an argument over a debt resulted in a French traders murder of one of the Natchez villagers. Unsatisfied with the French commanders reprimand of the murderer, the warriors of White Apple retaliated by attacking nearby French settlements until Tattooed Serpent&#39;s diplomatic efforts restored the peace. Within a year, a French army intent on punishing the warriors of White Apple demanded the surrender of a White Apple chief as recompense for the earlier Natchez attacks. Under pressure from the French and other Natchez villages, White Apple turned the chief over. When in the late 1720s both the elder Great Sun and Tattooed Serpent died, the chief of White Apple became the eldest Sun chief and had more political clout than the newly installed Great Sun, nephew of the previous Great Sun. The French continued to hold this new Great Sun responsible for the conduct of all Natchez villages and insisted on dealing with the Natchez people as a unified nation ruled from its capital, even though in reality this was not the situation. In 1729, the new French commander, Sieur de Chépart, ordered the emptying of White Apple so that he could use its land for a new tobacco plantation. This was the final affront to the Natchez. The chiefs of White Apple sent emissaries to potential allies, including the Yazoo, Koroa, Illinois, Chickasaw, and Choctaw. They also sent messages to the African slaves of nearby French plantations, inviting them to join the Natchez in rising up to drive out the French. The Natchez destroyed the French settlements in their territory. In retaliation, the French eventually killed or deported most of the Natchez people. Overshadowing the first three in scale and importance, this war is usually called simply the Natchez War.</p><br>
